Y.—Some of the most distinguished figures in the American scholarly world gathered at the Savoy- Plaza to welcome to America Dr. Judah L. Magnes, chancellor of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, who is here for a three months’ stay in behalf of the institution which he heads. Felix M. Warburg, chairman of the American Advisory Committee of the Hebrew University, spoke of the importance of the school for the development of Jew ish culture. “It is our duty to see that the ambitions of a Magnes, an Kin- stein, a Weizmann and of many others of similar stature should be realized through our aid,’’ he declared, adding that it is necessary that the university should free itself of all politics, and devote itself exclusively to learning. The Hebrew University was charac terized as “a bridge between antiquity and today” by Dr. Magnes, who said, in part: “Are the Jews, with their rich background, to say something more in the course of their history? Have they any life left to them? Any intellectual strength? We are studying the Jewish mind, we are studying the Arab mind, and we arc studying the Christian mind, all in this center of Judaism. For how can we have peace with them if we do not know how they think? Our history—to know whence we come and whither we are going—is a fundamen tal subject of the Hebrew University.” Chancellor Elmer Ellsworth Brown, of New York University, was toast master at the dinner. Speakers in cluded Dr. Cyrus Adler, President Clarence Barbour, of Brown; Prof. Harry A. Wolfson and Prof. William Ernest Hocking, of Harvard, and Prof. James Montgomery, of the University of Pennsylvania. Page 53 New York, N. The President that he had “always had the highest admira tion for the late Nathan Straus and when plans for a suitable memorial to his memory reach the stage where all are agreed as to what it shall be, I shall be glad to help further that project.” At the same time the Association went on record as opposed to the erection of * statue to Haymn Salomon on Broad way at 66th Street, on the grounds that no monument should he set up on that site. It recommended another place. London.—To be a Jew is a great ad venture, declares Louis Golding, noted English Jewish novelist, in an article in the Daily Express, replying to an article that had previously appeared in that paper painting a sad picture of the lot of the Jew today. Golding admits that the Jew is discriminated against everywhere; he feels, however, that that is no cause for pity and self-com miseration, inasmuch as the Jew has survived all oppression, being enriched by the venturesome life which he has had to lead.
