So, after a few minutes of cursory examination, he said: “Well, the medicine certainly did do you good. You arc rapidly improving. I suggest that you continue taking the medicine I gave you the first time.” . Proud Montefiore Such a story would have to he an old one, for these days you don’t find many of our poor Jews, much less wealthy ones, who take time off on a train journey to say their prayers. It was true, however, of Sir Moses Monte- fiorc, the famous English philanthro pist. One time, as Sir Moses was riding in a train between London and Glasgow and the afternoon sun began to wane, he stood up in his compartment, went to a corner and began to say the reg ulation afternoon prayer. His fellow- traveler in the compartment, a non- Jew, began to sneer at Sir Moses and to cast insulting remarks. But no re sponse came from the figure in the corner. When he had finished his prayers Sir Moses turned to the man and asked: “Can you change a hundred-pound note?” “I’m sorry, but I can’t,” the fellow replied. "How about a fifty?” "No.” “But surely a ten?” "Not even that.” Whereupon Montefiore remarked: “Then I can’t see what makes you so stuck up in the presence of a Jew who happens to he following the dictates of his religion.” (Copyright, 1931, by S.A.F.S.)
