The Mifitze Hascholah of Savannah. Ga.
Five years ago, a society was form
ed in Savannah by Mr. Mose Shur.
This society is known as the Mifitze
Hascholah, which is co-ordinating
with the Congregation B. B. Jacob
and with the Hebrew School to spread
and increase general knowledge of
Jewish culture among Jewish commu
nities near Savannah. The president
of the society is now Mr. Nathan
Persky, well known Hebrew scholar,
and the vice-president is Rev. H.
Geffen, cantor and prominent Jewish
figure, of Savannah.
This organization has its weekly
meetings every Wednesday evening at
the Jewish Educational Alliance
Building, featuring addresses by its
members or guests, concerning various
Jewish national, traditional, dogmati
cal, political and economical problems.
Most of the lectures are in Yiddish,
but the minutes are written and read
in Hebrew by Mr. M. Kaplan, an au
thority on the Hebrew language.
These lectures are largely attended,
with Mr. Persky in charge, who con
ducts the discussions in the form of an
educational resume. The entire gath
ering is entitled to take part in the
discussions and to express opinions.
During the past few months, lectures
were delivered by Mr. Nathan Persky,
Mr. O. Levy, Mr. A. Meddin, Mr. M.
Kaplan, and by Rev. H. Geffen.
Among the talks of interest that
were given is the lecture by Mr. 0.
Levy, who is a great scholar of the
Talmud. His address was on the prin
cipal dogmas of the Jewish faith, their
origin from the Torah and their suit
ability to every generation. Also of
great interest are the lectures by Rev.
H. Geffen, which are as follows:
“The Jews in history before the de
struction of the second temple.”
“Theology in general, and Jewish
theology in particular.”
“Tolerance in religion and tolerance
in social life, in touch with the true
culture.”
“Professor Einstein, the famous
scientist, and Einstein, the devotee
national Jew.”
“The relation between the old Greek
poet, Homer, the Hebrew prophet,
Isaiah, and the Bible.”
“The famous psychologist, Sigmund
Freud. The comparison between Freud
and Einstein. Freud’s contribution to
the modern philosophy, art, literature,
sociology and political economy. Freud
as a devoted Jew, and his splendid
work for the Jewish nation as one of
the aides and participator in the curi-
torium of the Jewish university in Je
rusalem. Freud as the authority on in
terpretations of dreams. Freud’s re
lation to wit and humor as a conse
quence of psycho-analysis.”
“The value of Hebrew literature
and its contribution to world litera
ture.”
“The value of the Mifitze Hascho
lah as a Hebrew educational institu
tion.”
“Judaism and the great medieval
philosopher, Baruch Spinoza. The re
lations between the principals of the
Jewish monotheistic conception of
God and the Pantheistic faith.”
“The Karaites, their origin, and the
other sects of Jewish faith, from the
time of the destruction of the second
temple until the present time. A gen
eral characteristic view about them.”
“The life works and poetry of the
late Hebrew poet, Y. L. Gordon, as
the first founder of the Mifitze Hasch
olah in Saint Petersburg. Russia, six
ty years ago.”
In May a special memorial ser
vice was held for Morris Shur, the
founder of the organization, and for
several other departed members. Mr.
Persky, in the chair, lauded the de
parted members in his introductory
remarks; Rabbi Nathan Rosen spoke
on immortality; Mr. M. Weisbord de
livered a lecture about the significance
of the Jewish holidays, as historic,
national and educational; and Rev.
GetTen, in an eloquent address remind
ed the members of the sterling virtues
of their departed brethren, and of the
services rendered by them in the early
stages of the organization, which is
now on a sound footing due to their
efforts. Members of the families of the
departed ones were special guests at
the services.
Launch Palestine Loan Preparations
London.—Lewis French, formerly
attached to the Indian Civil Service, is
leaving for Palestine as the director
of the survey that will be made in
preparation for the $12,500,000 devel
opment scheme, according to an an
nouncement made in the House of
Commons by Dr. Drummond Shiels,
Undersecretary of State for the col
onies At the same time Dr. Shiels
made public the letter from Lord
Passfield to High Commissioner
Chancellor, which describes the func
tions and the aims of the survey di
rector. At a cost of not more than
$250 000, Mr. French is to obtain a
certified list of all Arabs who lost
land as a result of purchases by Jews.
He is also to make recommendations
for improving the conditions of land
that is at present unarable. He is also
to determine whether it is advisable
to advance credit to Arab and Jewish
agriculturists.
All this work must be completed by
December 31, 1931. At that time, cop
ies of the report will be submitted to
the Jewish Agency and to the Arab
Executive, who are to make comments
on the findings. Soon thereafter, the
development scheme will go into ef
fect, it being understood that Parlia
ment will, in the meantime, approve
and guarantee the proposed loan of
$2,500,000. French will be under or
ders of the Palestine High Commis
sioner, The Agency and the Arabs are
both being asked to appoint single
representatives who will serve as ad
visors to French.
The director of the survey is com
paratively unknown, except that he
said to have had an excellent record
in India. There he assisted in agricul
tural development of a number of
provinces in which he represented the
British Government. General disap
pointment has been expressed among
Jews at his appointment, inasmuch as
it had been hoped that the Govern
ment would appoint a man whose
fame would command respect for his
findings.
