DAVID A. BROWN, banker, busi
nessman and internationally known
leader in philanthropic movements,
has been made president and publish
er of The American Hebrew, the
Anglo Jewish weekly.
Mr. Brown, who has headed many
large corporations, has been in the
public eye since the beginning of the
World War in connection with many
money-raising activities in which he
has been the leader. These activities
in the war-torn countries throughout
the world have been both Jewish and
non-Jewish. His efforts in connection
with the Joint Distribution Commit
tee in Russia and the other countries
of Europe received the personal praise
of President Hoover.
While chairman of the Finance
Committee of the Union of Ameri
can Hebrew Congregations, he also
labored shoulder to shoulder with the
late Louis Marshall in raising $1,000,-
000 for the Jewish Theological Semi
nary, as well as with the late Nathan
Lamport in the endeavor to create a
large fund for the Yeshiva College.
Mr. Brown is at present the Na
tional Chairman of the China Famine
Relief which, during the past two
years, has sent over $5,000,000 (Mex.)
into that country. He is the presi
dent of David A. Brown, Inc., of New
York; president of the Keystone
Transportation Company, of New
York; and a director and business
consultant in numerous commercial
enterprises in New York and else
where.
Guiding the destinies of The Amer
ican Hebrew with Mr. Brown are
Isaac Landman, editor; Walter Hart
Blumenthal, associate editor; Louis
Rittenberg, managing editor; and
Elias Lieberman, literary editor.
DAVID ENGLANDER, of Brooklyn,
and Benedict Goldman, of Pawtucket,
R. I. are two of the six most intel
ligent boys in the United States. That
is the finding of the Central Press
Association which conducted a nation
wide contest, and which ha3 sent the
boys on a tour of Europe as a prize
for being chosen in the contest.
ADOLPH WIMPFHEIMER, one of
the country’s largest hat factors, and
oldest member of the Adelphia Lodge
of Masons in New York, died here at
the age of 81. Wimpfheimer was born
in Germany and was brought to the
United States when he was two years
old. He established a business in
Charlotte, N. C. at the age of 14. He
later became an outstanding figure
in the haberdashery field.
EDWIN SAMUEL, son of Sir Her
bert Samuel, who is an official of the
Palestine Government, has left for
the United States to spend a year
there in study of American adminis
tration methods.
PROFESSOR EMIL WARBURG,
outstanding chemist and pioneer in
radio-activity research, died here at
the age of 85. Born at Altona in 1846,
Warburg studied chemistry and then
experiment physics. He was appointed
lecturer at Berlin in 1870, and then
moved to Strassburg and later to
Freiburg. During this time he was
investigating such problems as the
kenetic energy of gases, X-Rays and
other electro-chemical questions.
His researches in regard to the
transference of electricity made pos
sible the modern luminous discharge
tubes and rectifiers. He founded the
German Society of Lighting Tech
nique, and was for many years head
of the Physical Chemical Institute in
Berlin. In 1926 President von Hinden-
burg awarded the Honor Shield of
the Republic to Warburg for his dis
tinguished service in science. He was
also a member of the Academy of
Science.
LEWIS MILESTONE is the out
standing director in the movie indus
try, according to a survey conducted
by the Film Daily among 300 movie
critics. The films which won him the
first choice in the selection by the
critics of the ten foremost movie di
rectors were “All Quiet On The
Western Front” and “Front Page.”
ADOLPH FELDBLUM, of Brook
lyn, has been appointed impartial
chairman of the New York dress in
dustry by Governor Franklin D.
Roosevelt. The appointment of Mr.
Feldblum, who is an attorney and
Jewish communal worker, was ap
proved by the garment associations of
the industry.
DR. CHAIM WEIZMANN will be
a candidate for Parliament on the
Labor ticket at the elections, accord
ing to a rumor published in the Lon
don Jewish Chronicle.
PAUL BLOCK, noted newspaper
publisher, has accepted the chairman
ship of the 1931 campaign of the Jew
ish Federation of Charities, which is
to open in October, according to an
announcement by Felix M. Warburg.
The drive is for $5,230,000.
