Sumter, S. C. Jewry Ends Active Year
Ry RABBI SAMUEI R SHM LMAN
Sumter .Jewry has experienced a
year of diversified activities and
spiritual growth. With the election
°f a new Rabbi, who ministers regu
larly to the three communities of
Sumter, Columbia and Camden, the
Jewish interests have been greatly
intensified and the Jew’s throughout
this section have been brought closer
to Synagogal life.
The Sisterhood of Sumter, under
the faithful direction of its president,
Mrs. G. A. Kraker, entertained the
South Carolina State Federation of
Temple Sisterhoods on April 26-27,
19J1. Eleven Sisterhoods were repre
sented. Mrs. Rosa Hirschman, of
Charleston, presided. Mrs. Ernest
Horwitz, of Atlanta, was the chief
out-of-town guest speaker who ad
dressed the convention on “The Sis
terhood Perpetuates Jewish Ideal
ism”. At the close of the convention
Mrs. Leon Schlossberg, of Camden,
was elected state president for the
ensuing year.
Mrs. Henry Barnet, chairman of
the Sisterhood Religious School Com
mittee, wrote a dramatization of a
Passover Sedar service, which was
presented by the religious school
children at the annual Sisterhood
Sedar Supper on April 1, 1931.
Under the leadership of Mr. I. A.
Ryttenberg the Temple Brotherhood
carried out a successful year of edu
cational programs. Among the topics
discussed were: “Religious Condi
tions in Russia”, by Francis Moise;
“Jews in the Politics of the Nation”,
by Raymond Schwartz; “Paintings of
Isadore Kaufman”, by Rabbi Samuel
R. Shillman; “The Problem of Im
migration”, by I. C. Straus; “Jews in
American Sports”, by Harry Rytten
berg and Marion Moise; “Characters
in Shakespeare”, by Rev. Geo. T. Har
mon, and “Jews and Judaism”, by
Davis Moise.
During the course of the year the
pulpit was occupied by several visit
ors, among whom were Mrs. Julian
Hennig, of Columbia, who spoke on
“Edwin DeLeon”; Mr. Morton Ix?vy,
of Savannah, who discussed “The Ac
tivities of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations”; Rabbi Gus
tave F. Falk, Regional Rabbi of the
Southeastern Conference of the Union
of American Hebrew Congregations,
who lectured on “Jewish Life in the
Southeast”; and Rabbi David Levy, of
sainted memory, rabbi of New Haven,
Conn., and for many years spiritual
leader of Charleston, S. C., who
preached eloquently on “The Poetic
Soul”.
The community is proud to note
that Mrs. Ford Levi, prominent Sum
ter dub woman, has been elected
first vice-president of the South Caro
lina Federation of Womens Clubs;
that George I). Levy has been elected
Illustrious Potentate of Omar Temple,
A.A.O.N.M.S., the first Jew to oc
cupy such a position in the history of
this state; that Wendell M. Levi has
been elected president of the Ameri
can Pigeon Association; and that L.
Clifton Moise has published a new
hook called, “A Biography of Isaac
Harby”, an excellently well written
historical treatise that should find
its way into the home of every South
ern Jew.
Sumter is very happy to announce
that it is erecting a new community
center, to be known as the Minnie
Barnett Memorial. A committee com
posed of H. A. Moses, Raymond
Schwartz, Julian H. I^evy, and Jake
Weinberg, executor, will present this
memorial to Temple Sinai upon its
completion.
