A Review of the A. Z. A
(Continued from page 17)
on March 27 with Friday night ser
vices at the Ahavath Achim Syna
gogue. The entire service was con
ducted by Alephs. Simon Wender,
Aleph Godol, delivered the sermon
“Jewish Youth and the Synagogue.”
Paul Goldman, Aleph Kohen Godol,
gave the benediction. Aleph Sidney
Parks, in charge of the program,
lead the responsive reading, while
Aleph David Goldstein lead the con
gregational singing.
SYLVAN MAKOVER
Sergeant-at-Arms
A. Z. A. was host at a novelty
script dance at the Atlanta Woman’s
club on May 4. Then on May 10 the
Atlanta Alephs observed the first in-
Kducational Alliance. Addresses by
Henry A. Alexander and David N.
Meyer featured the entertainment.
The Atlanta chapter this summer
took over the sponsorship of Boy
Scout Troop 27. Alephs Edward Vaj-
da, Leonard Greenbaum, Albert Un-
gar, Sylvan Makover, and Paul Gold
man will act as assistant scoutmas
ters.
Henry A. Alexander publicly in
stalled the new officers of the chapter
on July 1 at the former Hebrew Or
phans’ home. The occasion also mark
ed the official opening of an A. Z. A.
room in that building. An outing and
wiener roast was held after the in
stallation.
Nathan Gershon, Aleph S’gan, rep
resented Atlanta at the international
convention held in Milwaukee, Wis.,
July 12-14.
Thus, the Atlanta chapter of
Aleph Zadik Aleph looks back with
pride at a year of varied achieve
ments and looks forward with confi
dence to a year of larger successes.
Plans are being made for an A. Z. A.
Bible Class, Friday night services,
inter-city tournaments, and a series
of lectures and open discussions.
Here are a few important dates in
the history of A. Z. A.:
May 3, 1924—First charter granted
to Omaha Chapter No. 1 by the Order
of A. Z. A. for Young Men.
July 4, 1924—First A. Z. A. conven
tion began in Omaha.
April, 1925—A. Z. A. adopted by
B’nai B’rith and name changed to
Order of Aleph Zadik Aleph of the
B’nai B’rith.
November, 1925—First appearance
of the Shofer, monthly A. Z. A.
magazine.
1926—A. Z. A. internationalized
with the opening of a chapter in
Canada.
1929—A. Z. A. published first
handbook.
September 16, 1930—The Atlanta
Chapter No. 134 installed.
Do you know that out of the At
lanta chapter:
Six out of the seven Alephs at
Emory University made the honor
roll this past term.
Four Alephs are scholarship win
ners.
Three Alephs have won the coveted
gold “B” for scholarship at Boys’
High in the last three years.
Three Alephs are leaders of junior
clubs.
One Aleph is a college graduate.
68 per cent of the total member
ship are high school graduates.
EDWARD R. VAJDA
Chaplain
50 per cent will attend college this
fall.
The last names of 35 per cent of
the Alephs begin with a “G”.
Many Atlanta Alephs have brought
honor to themselves and to A. Z. A.
by their outstanding achievements in
other fields. Only a few of these will
be mentioned here.
Past Aleph Godol Joe Glazer is
concert-master of the Emory Univer
sity “Little Symphony” orchestra. In
addition, he is solo violinist for the
Emory Glee Club, famous for its two
successful European tours. Glazer is
