The Ten Best Books of the Year
(Continued from page 41)
is “The Great Betrayal”, by Jacob
DeHaas and Dr. Stephen S. Wise.
Written hastily and in the heat of
temper it is no contribution to an
understanding of British obligations
and treachery in Palestine. Louis J.
Gribetz’s monograph, “The Case for
the Jews”, is the finest little volume
of which I know, dealing with the
respective rights and obligations of
Jews, Arabs, and British in Palestine,
from a legal point of view. “About
Zionism”, by Albert Einstein, is a
collection of some of the scientist’s
very potent observations on the need
for and the aims of the Zionist move
ment. Albert Londres traveled around
Europe and into Palestine studying
the aspirations of the Jewish people
EMIL LUDWIG
for a National Home and wrote his
sentimental, “The Jew Has A Home .
Angelo S. Rappaport, an Englishman,
has written a thoroughly unnecessary
“History of Palestine”.
A number of other books of miscel
laneous types—some of them very
valuable—are: “A Miniature History
of Art”, by R. H. Wilenski; “Law and
the Modern Mind”, by Jerome Frank;
“Social and Economic Views of Mr.
Justice Brandeis”, edited by Alfred
Lief; “Djuka”, a study of the Bush
Negroes in Dutch Guiana, by Morton
C. Kahn; “Can Such Things Be?”
an expose of corruption and conceal
ment in the newspaper world, by
George Seldes; “Jewish Pioneers in
America”, by Anita Lebeson; “That
Royal Lover”, a very scarlet history
of amours in Rumania and the sacri
fice of the Jews there, by Konrad
Bercovici; “The Gardener’s Year”, a
whimsical monograph for nature lov
ers, by Karel Capek; “Law and Lit
erature”, by Benjamin N. Cardozo,
the most humane judge in America
today; “Red Bread”, another study
of Russia, by Maurice Hindus;
“Tragedies of Progress”, and indict
ment of modern machine civilization,
by Gina Lobroso; and “Why Recog
nize Russia?”, a plea for the Soviets,
by Louis Fischer.
There were, of course, many other
volumes by Jewish writers issued dur
ing the past year. An attempt has
been made to mention only those of
the widest interest. The others that
received no mention should never
have been printed. Mercy forbids us
from listing them.

Finest Concerts to he Sponsored in Atlanta
(Continued from page 37)
Trained in the Royal Ballet of Ma
drid, she abandoned that severe
school to launch out for herself.
“Discovered” in a small theater in
Paris, she became the talk of the
press and the boulevards overnight.
Since then her career has been one
of steady triumph. New York critics
last year fairly raved over her. She
might have danced every night for a
month, but she was called back to
Europe. From London came press
cables saying: “When La Argentina
danced last night, the prince of
Wales rose in his box to applaud and
cry ‘Bravo!’ ”
February 22: Vladimir Horowitz, the
Russian pianist. Not so well known
as yet to the masses, but already the
idol of pianists and piano students
who heard his recitals in Boston and
New York. After his Carnegie Hall
recital in New Y"ork Olin Downes
wrote: “He received the wildest wel
come given a pianist in many sea
sons.” And in conservative Boston the
veteran critic Philip Hale said:
“There was a scene of enthusiasm
such as had not been aroused in
Symphony Hall since its opening.”
Horowitz was born in Kieff, Rus
sia, in 1904, so he is only 27 years
old. But he has played in every coun
try in Europe, giving many recitals
in principal cities, and is generally
looked upon as the pianist upon
whose shoulders the mantle of the
aging Paderewski will fall.
March 28: Yehudi Menuhin, the boy
violinist whose debut in New York
at the age of eight years amazed the
critics and set the telegraph wires
buzzing with the strange story of the
little Jewish boy who came from San
Francisco to astonish the musical
world.
Yehudi still is a boy—just in his
teens. His parents wisely permit him
to give only a few recitals a year.
He has played only in the greater
cities of America and Europe. But his
income is greater than that of the
President of the United States. He is
the highest-paid violinist in the
world. He has been given # the unique
distinction of election in Paris to the
Society of Friends of Music—an hon
or shared by only the most famous
of musicians.
No other city in the South will
hear Yehudi Menuhin this season, or
perhaps for many seasons. He declines
many more engagements than he can
accept.
