Palestine
A great deal of the Jewish news
of the year emanates from Palestine.
That is only natural, for there is sup
posed to be the axis of a new Jewish
life. Incidents that, in other coun
tries, might not be noticed, are given
prominent display when they leave
Palestine. Indications are that the
Jews of Palestine have been able to
hold their own in the economic depres
sion. The communal funds, supplied
by Jews in other lands, have been low
er than ever before and have accom
plished practically nothing in such ac-

tivities as immigration and coloniza
tion, but the ventures in which the in-
itative and the courage of Palestine
Jews are involved have kept running.
Palestine leaders have, in the main,
taken the attitude that political prob
lems do not matter much, and that
what is important is the building up
of a sound economic foundation.
The principal problem facing the
Jews of Palestine now is that of con
ciliation with the Arabs. During the
year the truce between the two groups
was somewhat broken by the killing
in ambush of three chalutzim return
ing from work at Haifa. No one was
ever apprehended, and whether it was
raiding Bedouins or Arabs was never
discovered. But all has not been peace
between the Jews themselves. The elec
tion of the Jewish National Assembly,
Assefat Hanivcharim, provided the oc
casion for a real election battle, and
although the Laborites obtained a ma
jority of the seats, there is no assur
ance that unity of action may be ex
pected from Palestine Jewry, due
largely to the Revisionists who main
tain a militant front. Another dis
turbing incident in the life of Pales
tine Jews is the attitude taken by a
great many planters, particularly at
Petach Tikvah, who insist on hiring
Arabs rather than Jews, because the
wages of the former are lower. It is
hard to convince anyone that the Gov
ernment is discriminating against
Jews in public works, when Jewish
employers themselves prefer to give
work to Arabs because they cost less.
One aspect of the Palestine situa
tion should he done with, as far ns the
Jews are concerned. That is the Wail-

ing Wall. After months of study, the
Wailing Wall Commission of the Lea
gue of Nations published its report in
June. The majority of Jews have ex
pressed a willingness to accept the
Commission’s findings, which were,
substantially, that Jews have a moral
right to worship at the Wall, though
it is legally the property of the Mos
lems. Certain restrictions on Jewish
worship are maintained but the princi
ple is upheld.
Other Countries
Jewish news in Europe is always
largely a question of anti-Semitism.
Some of the liberals are attempting
to cope with the problem. The League
to combat anti-Semitism, which has
headquarters in France, is one of the
most effective of these organizations.
An effort to co-relate the activities of
such groups was made this year when
the first conference on anti-Semitism
was held at Nijon, Switzerland. Chris
tians and Jews participated and dis
cussed the causes of the prejudice and
the methods for curing it. In the na
ture of all such conclaves, the only
product of the meeting was a series
of inspiring addresses.
France
France has had the Jewish problem
thrust upon it as a result of the in
flux of Jewish refugees from other
countries. Thus it has had to set a
numerus clausus in its professional
schools, designed to affect all foreign
ers but hurting Jews most. France
heard echoes of the Dreyfus case this
year as a result of the presentation
of “The Dreyfus Affair,” a play by
Jacques Richepin, son of Jean, one
of Dreyfus’ most fervent accusers. But
Jacques vindicated the Jew, and the
Camelots du Roi and other Royalists
started riots. Finally the play had to
be cancelled by Government order, be
cause of the anti-Semitic disturbances.
