Y.—Jews “talk too much”, declared Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the American Jewish Committee, in discussing current Jewish conditions at the Jewish Theological Seminary, of which he is president. Admitting that the situa tion of Jews in Eastern Europe is very depressing, Dr. Adler neverthe less declared that the newspapers color the situation even “gloomier than the fact warrant”. He felt that too much emphasis was being placed on the trivalities and not sufficient on the fundamental developments in Jewish life. He indicated that condi tions that are unfavorable can be al leviated without the constant public rehashing which now occurs. Reporting on his visit through Eu rope last summer, Dr. Adler also said that the “ghetto crouch” is still evi dent in many Jewish communities. He explained the term as a constant seeking of the “opdnion of people outside of our field about ourselves.” In this connection he also condemned the habit which American Jews have too of soliciting messages from high officials for the opening of fund-rais ing efforts as well as for the leading Jewish holidays. C.—Among the hun dreds of messages of felicitations re ceived by Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis, on the occasion of his 75th birthday on November 13th, was one from President Hoover who wrote: “Mrs. Hoover and I wish to be early in conveying to you our warm est congratulations on your seventy- fifth birthday. It is not necessary for us to remind you of the many sat isfactions which have crowned your public service and that you reflect a heart and mind which have made the nation your debtor. Even during your service as a member of the highest court in the land, you have found time to give service to the advancement of the Jewish homeland, and I have no doubt this has hrought happiness and comfort to thousands.” New York, N. Y.—The Jewish popu lation gives youth to the city of New York, according to a statement made in an article in the New York Times which was written by Dr. Louis I. Dublin, noted statistician of the Met ropolitan Life Insurance Co. Review ing the component parts of New York’s population, Dr. Dublin says that the Jews have made two impor tant contributions. “They have contributed youth. More than 40 per cent of the city’s Jews are under 20 years of age. Second, it has contributed an extremely low death rate. The death rate among Jews from tuberculosis is about two-fifths of that of the general population. The infant mortality rate is also extreme ly low, Jewish babies seem to have a genius for survival, even under the most unfavorable physical conditions. But coupled with a low death rate among Jews is an extremely low birth rate.” Zion, Ill.—In 1936, the Gentile na tions will perish and the Kingdom of Judah will be restored. That is the prophecy made by Wilbur Glenn Vo- liva, head of the Christian Catholic- Apostolic Church, who bases his pre diction on the theory that “the times of the Gentiles” will last 2,520 solar years, counting from the downfall of King David. In 1936 the nations will engage in a cataclysmic war and out of the ashes of the world the Jews will rise to new glory, Voliva says. New York, N.
