Let I s Be Judicious
“All quiet on the Eastern front" read the news dispatches
1 Poland. The University of Warsaw has reopened its doors,
and while Christian and Jewish students sit in separate sections
ol the classroom, peace seems to reign. But authoritative observ
ers report that while the anti-Semitic riots have stopped, there is
open advocacy in the press of the enforcement of an economic,
s °cial and intellectual boycott against the Jews. The Government,
it is stated, is trying its best to calm the excited elements
without taking the Jewish side “too aggressively". There can
be little doubt that the present Polish Government feels greatly
embarrassed by the recent anti-Jewish excesses. It is clear today
that the National Democrats, sworn enemies of the present
regime, are the instigators of the anti-Semitic activities. Their
aim is to “discredit" the Government by forcing it to take the
part of the Jews. This political move
can only be understood if one realizes
that because of the economic crisis, and
uk -r these circumstances the Govern
ment, if it wants to stay in power,

Under Cyrus the Great, the Persians conquered Babylonia,
terminating the captivity of the Jews and enabling our
people to return to their own land and re-establish their

what happened to the special Committee appointed a year ago
by the American Jewish Congress? Tnis body was to investigate
discrimination in universities and propose ways and means for
combating this deplorable state of affairs. It is high time that
the Committee started functioning.

Stefan Zweig
Stefan Zweig has just celebrated his fiftieth birthday. The
great German-Jewish author, whose works are well known in
this country, is regarded throughout Europe as one of the
strongest influences for international brotherhood. His interpre
tative works on Romain Holland, Tolstoy and others, as well as
his humanitarian outcry in “Jeremiah" and in his short stories
have rallied the intelligent youth of Europe around him. Stefan
Zweig is correctly classified as a man without a country. His
outlook is never local. His patriotism is never limited to his
adopted fatherland. Nor has he embraced Zionism. He stands for
the same ideals that make Einstein
and Romain Holland the two outstand
ing spiritual leaders of this period.

As Well as the Pope
Some wit, in an effort to stimulate
interest in Hebrew education in this
country, has suggested: “l^arn to
speak Hebrew as well as the Pope."
Funny, but not so far fetched. Pope
Pius gave an exhibition of his vast
Hebrew knowledge when, the other day,
he granted a two hour audience to the
Chief Rabbi of Milan. The conversa
tion, it is reported, was conducted en
tirely in Hebrew. His Eminence speaks
a fluent and most colorful Hebrew
which might be the envy of many of
the American rabbis. We shudder to
think what would have happened if the
audience were with one of our own
would-be rabbis whose Hebrew knowl
edge is not so catholic. Suppose the
Pope had begun in Hebrew! Our rabbi
would have been compelled to say:
“Your Eminence, let us speak Latin."
A humorous situation. Fortunately it
will not occur. Our rabbis are now
warned: learn Hebrew or never see
the Pope.
