A PRINCE AMONG JEWS
(Continued
than fifty years ago when Baron de
Hirsch began his gigantic Jewish re
construction work. But the ICA colo
nies have undoubtedly proven that,
given the right kind of help, Jewish
Luftmenschen can adjust themselves
and become productive units of any
country. And that was all Baron de
Hirsch set out to demonstrate. Asked
to explain the purpose of the Jewish
Colonization Association the Baron,
five years before his death, said: “In
relieving human suffering I never
ask whether the cry of necessity
comes from a being who belongs to
my own faith or not, but what is more
natural than that I should find my
highest purpose in bringing to the
followers of Judaism, who have been
oppressed for a thousand years, who
are starving in misery, the possibility
of physical and moral regeneration—
than that I should try to free them,
to build them into capable citizens,
and thus furnish humanity with much
new and valuable material? Every
page in the history of the Jews teach
es us that in thinking of this I am
following no Utopian theory, and I
am confident that such a result can
be attained.
One year before his death, Dr.
Herzl came to him and tried to inter
est him in the Zionist ideal. The
Zionist leader, in his interview with
the great philanthropist, dwelt at
length on the spiritual and cultural
aspects of Zionism. Baron de Hirsch
interrupted him and explained his at
titude to the Jewish question as fol
lows: “No, no, I do not want to lift
the niveau. Much of our misfortune
comes from the fact that the Jews
from page 5)
want to go too high. We have too
much intelligentsia. I want to show
the world that Jews can make good
farmers. This might help to induce
Russia to give them a chance to work
on the fields.” (How well Baron de
Hirsch succeeded the successful Jew
ish Back-to-the-Land movement in So
viet Russia today shows.)
Baron de Hirsch did not join Herzl
in the Palestine project, yet the Zion
ist leader was deeply impressed with
his sincerity and mentality. The day
the news of Baron de Hirsch’s death
reached him he wrote in his diary:
“His death is a loss for the Jewish
cause. Of the rich Jews, he was the
only one who wanted to do something
big for the unfortunates. Our cause
(Zionism) has become poorer today.
I never ceased hoping that we would
win Hirsch for our plans.”
It is not known just how much
Baron de Hirsch gave to charity and
to Jewish colonization scheme. Some
place the amount, including the gifts
from his widow, at $60,000,000, oth
ers name a sum almost twice as high.
But whatever the exact figure, Baron
de Hirsch, who a hundred years ago
was born with a golden spoon in his
mouth, gave his all to the Jewish
cause. Somehow, he must have sensed
that the Jewish problem would be
come more acute as time went on.
Baron de Hirsch was a Prince
among the Jews. He never wanted to
be a Jewish prince. His life should
be studied by the Jewish youth of to
day. It represents one of the most
beautiful pages of the Jewish history
of the nineteenth century.

But there was no character in New
York during his time that equalled
the romance of his life.
They say that when he got older
he became a little bit cautious of his
mode of life. He went to a doctor
for advice. The medico asked him how
much whiskey he drank daily.
“Only a quart”, replied Imber.
“Do you smoke much?” the physi
cian continued.
“Not more than fifty cigarettes a
day”, he was told.
“I’ll have to forbid you to drink or
smoke”, the doctor concluded. Where
upon Imber grabbed his hat and bang
ed the door behind him. The doctor
ran after him and shouted:
“Say, you forgot to pay me for my
advice.”
ell, I’m not taking your advice,”
the author of “Hatikvah” shot back.
