Dear Sir:
I have read Mr. Clarence Darrow’s article In
3 tiled rwf
In y “" r m > it/,'
As I am only a sophomore'at the T]niver.ltv
of North Carolina I thought that you would be
interested in having one of the younger generation
w,, “ T| " K5KT.
Thanking you for this favor, I am.
Yours truly,
HARRY STEIN.
In Opposition to
Mr. Cla re nee D arrow
By Harry Stein
Several issues past The Southern
Israelite contained an article by Mr.
Darrow in which he stated the reasons
why he is opposed to the Zionist move
ment. Though I am somewhat less expe-
i ienced than Mr. Harrow, it is my pur
pose in this article to confute several of
the points which he demonstrated in op
position to the one really great movement
which the Jews of today and the Jews of
some few decades from the present have
to look forward to, and to have a home
land—language, customs, government—
of their own.
At present the Jews are trying to make
England give them Palestine as it was
promised by the Balfour Declaration.
Whether or not the phraseology of the
Declaration was stated carelessly the
Jews are entitled to demand England to
live up to the provisions. After all, the
few colonies that the Jews have alreadv
settled in Palestine should he proof that
we are able to take care of ourselves
economically and agriculturally. The
Balfour Declaration has been given the
Jewish people and it makes no difference
whether they stated the provisions care
fully or not the Jews should do all possi
ble to hold England to it.
Mr. Harrow has very carelessly stated
that Zionism is “a woefully inadequate at
tempt to solve the Jewish problem.”
Though it is quite possible that the Zion
ist movement may fail, the Jews must
have something to look forward to and
something to make them work together.
If enough of this interest is aroused and
continued then what obstacles are in our
way to hinder us from obtaining our
homeland? As far as reviving the He
brew language is concerned this is an
easy matter to contend with. It is by no
means as difficult as “bringing hack the
oxcarts and sun dials.” At present many
high schools and colleges are conducting
courses in Hebrew. Not only are Jewish
boys and girls enrolled in these classes
but many Gentiles as well. Naturally
there is a possibility of a universal lan
guage coming in to use and taking the
place of Hebrew as a country s language
but Hebrew will never die out as the
tongue of the Jewish people.
Until the Jews have established an in
dustrial and agricultural state their time
may be devoted to working the land into
a fertile soil and in building the land
into several large and beautiful cities. I
admit that this will take years but in
some time the work will show the fruit
of this toil. It will not be in our time
that Palestine will be the Jewish home but
for the Jews that will follow us. After
this homeland is founded and established
it will be as a memorial to the Jews of
tedav as well as for the Jews of all time
and a memorial of the Jews for all time.
New York, N. Y—A voluntary tax on
all matzohs sold in New ^ ork City in
order to provide funds for Jewish educa
tional activities was suggested at a con
ference of orthodox rabbis to discuss the
status of the Talmud Torahs, many of
which have been forced to close for lack
of funds. The proposal for the matzohs
tax will be taken up with the manufac
turers.
