« * NOTES « . .
Nevv A ark, N. Y.—A new play around
the theme of death was the feature
at the celebration of the sixtieth year
of the life of David Pinski, noted Yiddish
playwright and novelist. The first act
of A. R. Z. V.,” a drama of social pro
test, was performed at Mecca Temple by
leading members of the Yiddish stage.
Numerous speakers talked of Pinski’s
place in \ iddish literature and of the part
he had played in developing a social rev
olutionary consciousness among the Jew
ish masses.
Detroit, Mich.—The value of birth con
trol was endorsed by the National Coun
cil of Jewish Women at its annual con
vention here. Other resolutions adopted
at the final session touched upon various
aspects of social and economic legislation.
Mrs. Arthur Brin, of Minneapolis, was
elected president of the Council. Other
officers are Mrs. Joseph Friend, New Or
leans, honorary vice-president; Mrs. Sid
ney M. Cone, Baltimore; Mrs. Joseph M.
Welt, Detroit; Mrs. Maurice L. Gold
man, vice-presidents; Mrs. Benjamin
Marvin, treasurer, and Mrs. Gerson B.
Levy, Chicago, secretary.
Paris—A demand that the Zionist Re
visionists refuse to pay the shekel fee to
the World Zionist Organization and that
they form a new Zionist organization
was made by Vladimir Jabotinsky, Revi
sionist leader, at a conference of his fol
lowers being held here. Jabotinsky
warned that he would withdraw from
the Revisionists and destroy their organi
zation if they did not yield to his demand.
Warsaw—Ninety per cent of the chil
dren who attend the schools maintained
by the Jewish community of Warsaw
come to their classes, in many cases, with
out having had any food that day. 'Phis
was the gist of a report made by the com
munity’s chief examining school physician.
This malnutrition is working great havoc
on the health of Polish Jews, with the
result that the death rate is increasing,
the report stated.
Albany, N. Y.—A rebuke unprecedented
in New York political history was admin
istered to Dr. Stephen S. Wise and Dr.
John Haynes Holmes, respectively vice-
chairman and chairman of the New York
City Affairs Committee, when Governor
Franklin D. Roosevelt rejected their plea
that a Brooklyn sheriff be removed from
office because of unexplained bank ac
counts. In the preface of his letter deny
ing the demand, the Governor said: “It
would perhaps he easy for me to question
the good faith in which these letters are
written or to assume that you care more
for personal publicity than for good gov
ernment. Nevertheless . . .”
London—There are only 122 Jews in
the English army, which comprises a staff
of 183,000 men and officers, according to
military statistics published here. It is
pointed out, however, that some of the
soldiers may not have answered accu
rately the question which relates to re
ligion.
Salonica, Greece—The Jewish quarter
of Salonica is constantly patrolled by po
lice in order to avert any disturbances
that may arise out of the excitement that
has been caused by the beginning of the
trial against those implicated in the anti-
Semitic riots of last July. Several news
paper of nationalist hue have warned the
court against imposing sentence on young
Greeks because of the pressure being
brought to hear by the Jewish community.
Precautions arc being taken by the gov
ernment against a recurrence of the
clashes of last summer which ended in
the burning of the Campbell Jewish quar
ter.
Mexico City—El Nacional, leading or
gan in the current anti-Semitic campaign
in Mexico, will hereafter refrain from at
tacks on the patriotism of the Jewish peo
ple, as a result of an agreement signed
between the paper and the Jewish Cham
ber of Commerce. El Nacional has been
insisting that Jews are trying to evade the
new Mexican statutes which forbid the
employment of more than ten per cent for
eigners in Mexican establishments. The
papers has also asserted that many Jews
are in Mexico illegally. The agreement
provides that El National will receive
comprehensive facts on the Jewish status
from the Jewish Chamber of Commerce,
which stands ready at all times to sup
ply the paper with information on Jews
in the land and the extent of their em
ployment.
New York, N. Y.—The much abused
columnists, descendants of Walter Winch-
ell, have received a crumb of satisfaction
from the pulpit of Rabbi Israel Gold
stein, who in a sermon on contemporary
Jewish life, declared that “Americans
should feel that they are under a debt
of obligation to those who by pen and
tongue are prodding their countrymen to
self-criticism.”
Ithaca, N. Y.—The Jews now form the
second largest religious group at Cornell
University, according to a report by the
B’nai Brith which sponsors the Hillel
Foundation at Ithaca. There are 750
Jews in the school a substantial increase
over previous years. I he B nai Brith at
tributes the sharp rise to the influence of
the Hillel Foundation in welcoming Jew
ish students.
