of a super-diplomat.
And as one observes the dean of liv
ing British statesmen, one easily under
stands his legendary success, his adven
turous career from ship-boy to Viceroy
of India. No books will reveal to you
more than these few minutes face to face
with this amazingly vital personality.
Several decades of responsible partici
pation in the governing of England have
neither curbed his tall figure nor dulled
his elastic mind. There is still a boyish
quality and ready smile in his inquisitive
eyes. There is still a youthful charm in
his every gesture and step. One easily un
derstands his unique success as attorney,
diplomat and statesman. It is primarily
due to his quick grasping intellect and his
nimble tongue. It is also the result of his
never wavering optimism, his tremendous
capacity for work. And while the Mar-

JEWS AND THE GERMAN SPIRIT
(Continued from page 12)
and Sophocles if a few hundred of them
lived among you. But as things are it
is our misfortune to be a thoroughly
alive mass-entity, something out of the
common as a group but not as individ
uals; and this redounds to our disadvan
tage with you and with all other peo
ples, and even with a majority of our
own race. Our great men become part
of the heritage of the nations among
whom they live—we are flotsam on the
sea of your growth and development and
at the same time move with the current
of the Jewish spirit and destiny in the
Diaspora; we see this and are content.
Life is manifold, manysided—it must be
viewed from all angles; it is constantly
moving—alive.
This is our law, which we obey with
the joy of freedom and a lofty destiny.
We shall champion whatever causes wt
feel should be furthered—for you and
for us here, for the Arabs and for us in
Palestine. For we, stubborn old hearts
that have been tried but not broken, that
have aged but not grown decrepit—we
are the friends and comrades of all who
fight for justice, for peace on earth, for
goodwill. For since the ancient days we
have loved life and the earth, and are
truly children of both.

JUIAN MORGENSTERN: If Rabbi
Schanfarber’s plan ever gets real

presidency of the combined Semin

JAMES WATERMAN WISE: When
we don’t get Opinion, we miss it.
When we do get it we find plenty
of faults. In any case we’re used

DO YOU KNOW?
During hard times all of us have the
tendency—uncomfortable to those in
volved—toward placing the blame on one
person or firms for existing conditions,
whether such charges are true or not.
The Georgia Power Company—a most
efficient organization in the way of real
public service—has recently been placed
unfavorably before the public in refer
ence to their service charge. It happens
that the average public does not appre
ciate the real facts in the matter, and
sincec the Jewish people are great users
of electricity', they are entitled to some
definite understanding regarding this im
portant service that affect their every
day life.
Briefly, the service charge covers in
part such costs of providing electric serv
ice to each customer as go on each month
regardless of whether the customer uses
any electric current or not. Obviously, it
is only fair and just that each customer
should pay at least the cost of providing
his service. And it is equally obvious
that if some do not, other will pay more
to make up the difference. The latter was

to use electricity for cooking, for retrii:
