Y.—An organized effort to raise funds for the Jewish Agency for Palestine to enable that body to facilitate the immigration into Palestine of Jews from Germany and other Central and Eastern European countries was launched at the Hotel Astor at the dinner given in honor of Nathan Straus, Jr., by the Jew ish Agency. More than six hundred and fifty of New York’s notables in business, politics and the professions were present to pay tribute to Mr. Straus for his serv ices in the upbuilding of the Jewish home land. In addition to Morris Rothenberg, President of the Zionist Organization of America, who was toastmaster, the speakers included Mayor John P. O’Brien, Aldermanic President Joseph V. McKee, Louis Lipsky, National Chairman of the American Palestine Campaign, Or. Ste phen S. Wise, James Marshall, Abraham Goldberg, George Gordon Battle, George MacDonald, Mrs. Rose Halprin, Presi dent of Hadassah, and Mr. Straus. All the speakers referred to the situa tion in Germany, and declared that Pa lestine offered a refuge for those Jews in Europe who are fleeing from persecution or whose livelihood is jeopardized by economic discrimination. Mr. Louis Lipsky, National Chairman of the fund-raising effort of the Jewish Agency for Palestine declared that inas much as the Jewish Agency is recognized by the League of Nations, it should call upon the latter body to intervene on be half of the Jews of Germany. T New York, N. Y.—While Paul Manger, self-styled leader of the National Social ist Party in New York, was being dis missed from his post as superintendent of a house in Brooklyn owned by a Jewish realty firm, United Attorney Howard Atneli started an investigation of Man ger’s status as an alien, looking to action that may deport Manger as being here without proper credentials. Manger, who has been in the United States for seven years, is not an American citizen. ▼ Trenton, N. J.—Joseph B. Perskie of Atlantic City was named Associate Jus tice of the New Jersey Supreme Court by Governor Harry A. Moore. A prominent Zionist and active in Jewish communal affairs is Atlantic City's City Solicitor. ▼ Washington, I). C.—Samuel Untermyer, noted New York lawyer, and famous as a defender of public rights, has been the chief consultant of President Roosevelt in the formation of a new “securities” policy for the Government, according to friends of the President, who points out that Mr. Roosevelt has been in communication with Mr. Untermyer constantly. Mr. Untermyer who handled the money-trust investigation of 1921, is now said to be drawing up the measure to be submitted to Congress which will provide for the effective regulation of stock and com modity exchanges. ▼ Vienna.—Encouraged by the success of Chancellor Adolf Hitler in Germany, and enthused by the possibiilty of launching a full-Hedged anti-Semitic program in this country, the National Socialists of Austria have renewed their anti-Jewish campaign with extraordinary vigor and hope thereby to be swept into office, sup planting the bourgeois Chancellor Dol- fuss. The Nazis made a city-wide de monstration in protest against the trial of Nazis held on a charge of having ex ploded stink bombs in Jewish department stores. New York, N. Y.—Diego Rivera, noted Mexican—Jewish artist, has been com missioned to do one of the huge murals in the RCA building at Radio City, The work, which is to be 63 feet long and 17 feet high, will be in the main hall and will depict “human intelligence in con trol of the forces of nature.” ▼ Berlin—Louis Ullstein, one of the fore most figures in the German publishing world, who, with his brothers, controlled many of the leading magazines and news papers in Germany, died here at the age of 70. Ullstein, who was the head of the firm, was responsible for developing the concern into the largest magazine pub lishing house in the world, employing more than 7,000 men. Many of his papers were suspended during the past few weeks as a result of Nazi charges that this Jewish firm was “poisoning” the Ger man mind. ▼ Chicago, III.—Dr. Chaim Wetzmann, former President of the World Zionist Organization, will come to the United States to participate in the “Jewish Day" on July 3rd at the Chicago Century of Progress Exposition, according to an an nouncement made here by Louis Lipsky at meeting of the Midwest Zionist Region. A pageant will be enacted on that day at Soldiers’ Field and an audience of more than 100,000 Jews is expected. ▼ Moscow—Emma Redell, Baltimore-born Jewish girl, former prima donna of the Chicago Civic Opera Company was the guest of honor at a farewell dinner given by Gometz, the Soviet Theatrical Asso ciation. Miss Redell, who is leaving for opera engagements in London and Vienna following a concert tour in Russia, was presented with a silver badge of hon orary membership in Gometz. The date engraved on the badge was March 8th, twentieth anniversary of International Woman’s Day. ▼ Washington, D. C.—In hearings before the House Immigration Committee to re lax present immigration restrictions, Wil bur Carr, Assistant Secretary of State, appeared for his department to urge against the lifting of restrictions. Va rious speakers at the Committee hearing made it clear that the anti-Semitic inci dents in Germany were behind their ef forts to make possible the immigration into the United States of Jewish refugees from the Reich. Mr. Carr declared that “the State Department is doing every thing possible to protect American citi zens abroad," adding “we thing it would be understood by the public at large as an effort by Congress to admit the so- called persecuted people in Germany in to the United States.” ▼ Kansas City, Mo.—The National So cialists of Germany started their anti- Semitic campaign merely because they want whatever jobs are held by Jews, ac cording to a speech radio hereby Jules Sauerwein, distinguished French Jour nalist of Le Temps of Paris. “If the Jews in Germany did not have jobs and money, there would be no fanaticism against them.
