form of protest be continued until the
Hitler persecution ceases.
On the urging of Dr. Stephen S. Wise,

In New York City, shop owners and
[employers of labor will be asked to close

man-Jewish director, who was forced by
the Nazis to leave Germany, has been in
cited to Italy by Premier Mussolini, who
'UKgr'ted the production of a number of
bhake*pearean plays.

Vienna.—Declaring that the Austrian
Government would take every measure to
»afeguard the Jewish population, Chan
cellor Dolfuss, who assumed the dicta-
tor*hip in order to ward off a Nazi
putsch, told President Friedman of the
' ienna Jewish Community Council that
the Austrian Jews had no cause to fear
anti-Semitic rioting. Friedman had gone
to 'ee the Chancellor as a result of in
creasing anti-Jewish propaganda in the
country.

<iallv invited the Federation of Jewish
- s <-ldier* to recommend three per cent of
the 5,000 members of the Heimwehr aux-
' •ar\ police that is being recruited by
'he authorities. The anti-Semites de-
nounr c th e invitation as a “sell-out” to the
evr N ignoring the fact that three per

arc " ' d by the fact that during the visit
,0 h me of Prussian Minister Hermann

SOUTHERN ISRAELITE *
Papen, Premier Mussolini managed to in
clude his Jewish Finance Minister, Judah
Jung, in most of the conferences and
gave him a leading place at official recep
tions and dinners to the visiting German
Nazis. Italian Jews believe that II Duce
thereby hoped to give the anti-Semitic
leaders a subtle indication of how Jews
can be treated.
Saloniki.—Jews are now permitted to
join the Hellas organizatiton, the anti-
Semitic body which was responsible for
the riots of two years ago. It is under
stood that Premier Tsaldar is responsi
ble for the change in the constitution
which removes the anti-Jewish character
of the association.
Warsaw.—Renewed anti-Jewish rioting
is reported throughout Poland as a result
of active Nazi propaganda, which has
acquired new strength as a result of the
activities of the Hitlerites in Germany.
I.odze and nearby cities have been the
scene of frequent clashes between Chris
tian and Jewish groups, where the cry
“Down with the Jews" has accompanied
the beating of Jewish men and women.
Bucharest. — Hundreds of Rumanian
anti-Semites rushed through the Jewish
market place of Czernowitz, damaging
Jewish places of business and atracking
Jews, and were dispersed only when a
heavy brigade of police arrived. The
rioters, who carried guns, injured many,
including a number of policemen. “Down
with Lupcscu” was one of the cries of the
anti-Semitic hoodlums as they smashed
Jewish windows. The riot continued for
many hours.
Jerusalem.—The insistence by the Brit
ish Trumpeldor, Revisionist Zionist youth
group, on wearing their regulation brown
shirts, despite the disapproval of the Pal
estine Jewish community because of the
resemblance to the Hitlerite “brown
shirts,” caused a clash this week when
several thousand of the young followers
of Jabotinsky gathered at Tel Aviv for
a conference. The meeting was followed
by a parade, which was attacked by
angry followers of the Jewish Federation
of Labor. A riot resulted, which brought
out the police. A number of the march
ers and attackers were arrested.
Jerusalem.—The visit to Palestine of
Sir Philip Cunliffe-Listcr, British Colonial
Secretary, has been made the occasion
for launching the plan of the Government
to settle “landless” Arabs on State lands.
More than one hundred of such Arabs
have been provided over, each family re
ceiving fifty dunems of land. Govern
ment officials will instruct the Arabs in
the latest agricultural methods, with the
Jews as models.
During his stay in the country, Sir
Philip visited more than a dozen Jewish
colonies, in each of which he expressed
his satisfaction with the progress being
made. Jews and Arabs were both repre
sented in the reception accorded him at
Rosh Pina. Sir Philip expressed his pleas
ure at the cooperation between the two
groups. It is rumored that the Colonial
Secretary’s visit pressages the carrying
through of an agricultural loan plan, such
as had been proposed two years ago, but
which seemed to have been forgotten,
with Arabs and Jews alike opposed to the
program.
