Hitler Protest Features
Y. M. C. A. Dedication
New York, N. Y.—With Catholics,
Protestants and Jews gathered at the
Hotel Biltmore for a luncheon marking
the fiftieth anniversary of the Interna
tional Committee of the Young Men’s
Christian Associations and the dedication
of the new Y. M. C. A. building in Jeru
salem, the occasion was marked by vig
orous speeches denouncing anti-Semitism
in Germany and pleading for Christian
aid for Jews in the Reich.
The keynote was struck by I)r. Solo
mon Lowenstein, when he declared that
“it is incumbent upon the conscience of
the non-Jewish world, represented by such
agencies of goodwill and brotherly love
as the International Committee of Young
Men’s Christian Associations, to thunder
forth a Sinai-like ‘Thou shalt not’ to
these tyrants who would deny to a large
group of their fellow citizens the ele
mental rights to life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness."
A speech in similar vein was made by
Major General John F. O’Rynan, who
spoke of “a new plague to discourage
those of goodwill among the world’s peo
ples, an outbreak of racial and religious
persecution directed against those of the
Jewish faith in Germany. Intolerance
based upon race or religion seems to be
a form of disease which readily infects
more particularly the inefficient and less
stable elements of the world’s popula
tions, for it gives them the opportunity
to gain at the expense of others that
which their character or talents deny
them through merit.’’
For the first time in wireless history,
a voice from Jerusalem was broadcast
in the United States by radio. The ad
dress made at the dedication of the
Jerusalem Y. M. C. A. by General F.d-
mund Allenby was heard in the United
States over a National Broadcasting
hookup. Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, of
Cleveland, participated in the ceremonies
in Jerusalem.
