with Jewish honor. They are bootlegging
the rabbinate. They are prostituting a
sacred calling.
It was sickening during the early years
of the prohibition enactment to see
screeching headlines in our daily news
papers gleefully broadcasting the arrest
of a supposed “rabbi” for the alleged
violation of the Volstead Act. Most of
those apprehended were not orthodox
rabbis. The majority of them were can
tors, teachers, sextons, traveling collectors,
and other individuals who called them
selves “rabbi.” Every “rebbe,” teacher,
became “rabbi” to the court and news
paper reporters. The Jewish name was
thus mercilessly and unjustly traduced.
The appelation “rabbi” became a leering
by-word in the mouth of the rabble. But
the situation became much more sicken
ing and intolerable when this traffic in
spirits overflowed into a traffic of the
spirit among our own.
Let us briefly consider, as examples,
some of the men who have “broken into”
the rabbinate. A "meshullach,” or itin
erant collector, who has been invested
with the title “rabbi” by the institution
he represents in order to facilitate his
approach for funds and insure a friend
lier reception, and, consequently, a larger
contribution.—A field, worker for the
Zionist Organization, while touring the
South in behalf of the movement, is ac
tually offered a pulpit in a Texan com
munity to supplant one of the local rabbis
on the strength of his forensic abilities.
(To his credit be it said that he gra
ciously declined the invitation.)—A cen
ter director who also assumes the mantle
of religious leadership and calls himself
“rabbi,” unchallenged by the national
office.—A young man, expelled from two
seminaries, one conservative, the other
reformed, then spends about a year in
an orthodox institution, is accepted as
“rabbi” without even the slightest at
tempt to inquire about his qualifications
or previous record. A relative on the
board of directors is his open sesame to
religious leadership.—A one-eyed com
bination cantor, teacher, sexton and col-

bath morning services. Nothing less than
being called “rabbi” suited him. Fortu
nately, the president of the congregation
sent him off when he learned of his un
bearable pretentions. But he is still
“rabbi,” witness the Jewish and non-
Jewish press in his vicinity.—A Hebraist
who gave his approval on the Hollywood
lot for the filming of “The King of
Kings.” He should know better, but he,
too, is a “rabbi” occupying a pulpit.—
Another “rabbi” who passed upon the
fitness of this same film, organized a re
formed congregation on such a grand
scale that it has since foreclosed. Famed
as an author, he stands in jeopardy of
being sued by his “ghost writer.” But
what of that? An eastern congregation
has already selected him as the outstand
ing “rabbi” of all the candidates pre
sented by the various progressive semi
naries.—A “rabbi” who sells insurance
after services.—A “rabbi” convicted of
larceny and perjury.—A “rabbi” ar
rested and jailed for forgery in upstate
New York. Ousted from the community,
within a month he has been accepted as
leader by another congregation else
where.—A “rabbi” in a southern com
munity apprehended in a most indiscreet,
to put it mildly, triangular amour. Etc.,
etc.
These and similar examples furnish
ample material for those who would de
fame the rabbinate and paint them all
of one ilk. Of course, there are black
sheep among ordained rabbis, too, as
there are among any other professional
or non-professional group. But the over
whelming majority have, at least, a sense
of responsibility to their seminaries and
their colleagues.

encouraging historical research, establish
ing a museum of antiquities, co-operating
with the Hebrew University. But this
side of Great Britain must be summoned
to keep with us a watchful eye upon
that other, the imperialistic side, which
has no mandate, whether from the League
of Nations or from mankind, for enter
prises on this soil which serve the Em
pire alone, the guarding of the Canal,
the opening of communications to the East,
the piping of Mosul oil to port. These
enterprises, neither commanded nor for
bidden by the mandate, may be taken as
the understood consideration on which
the mandate is accepted. We have no
quarrel with that view so long as it is
consistent with the character of Pales
tine and the welfare of its people. Let
Great Britain, we say, serve herself as
she may within the greater interest; but
let her act first as an honest mandatory.
Let her put off her weak acquiescence in
the trend to industrialization. Let her
retard the inevitable changes of an in
trusive modernity, adjusting their pace to
the awakening needs of the people, so
that Palestine may retain the harmony of
its customary life and of its aspect as it
grows into new forms. And let her rec
ognize the interest of the Arab states by
securing to them free Access from the in
terior to the sea, and freedom of trade
and also of political intercourse across
the obnoxious boundaries.
The two enemies of peace in the Holy
Land are fanaticism and fear. The move
ment of the modern spirit within all
creeds is having for one of its beneficent
effects the gradual melting of fanaticism
without argument. Fixed and antagonistic
dogmas are transforming themselves into
alternative sets of symbols which can
dwell together. But fanaticism is kept
alive and sharpened by fear: clashes at
