ylctivities Throughout the South
The Atlanta A. Z. A. Chapter, Junior
Order of the B'nai B’rith, received mes-
sages of congratulations from A. Z. A.
Chapters of all parts of this country and
Canada upon its winning second place in
best all-round chapter contest for the past
year. This honor was in competition with
over 160 Chapters which compose the or
der. To be eligible for consideration at
all for this honor a Chapter must have
met each of the following qualifications:
Its program must include some cultural,
religious, social service, athletic and so
cial activities. It must observe locally
International A. Z. A. Day, International
A. Z. A. Sabbath and A. Z. A. Parents’
Day. It must have entrants in the essay
contest sponsored by the Advisory Coun
cil. It must have met all financial ob
ligations.
Besides being qualified in all of these
qualifications the Atlanta Chapter spon
sored the 1933 Southern District Con
clave last March 3-5, at which it won
the debating and basketball tournament.
The Chapter placed second in the orator
ical contest in this conclave.
Ihe local Chapter has just returned
from an inner-chapter visit to Charles
ton, S. C., where it spent several en
joyable days. At present there is a dele
gation of five local members at the In
ternational A. Z. A. convention in Omaha,
Nebraska. Another announcement of im
portance received from the convention
was the election of Arthur Gottesman,
Atlanta member, to the office of Grand
Treasurer of the order.
'The Atlanta Chapter has been estab
lished only three years and is looking
forward to another successful year. Of
ficers of the Atlanta Chapter are Edwin
Gavron, president; Irwin Krick, vice-
president; Moses Abelsky, secretary; Ar
thur Gottesman, assistant secretary; Na
than Smith, treasurer; Simon Wender,
chaplain; Bernard Mandel, sergeant-at-
arms; Morris Seigel, assistant sergeant-
at-arms; and Seymore Cohen, reporter.

At a special board meeting of the At
lanta Unit, Junior lladassah, held re
cently at the Ansley Hotel, the newly-
elected president, Miss Lillian Reisman,
announced the following chairmen of
standing committees: Jewish National
Fund, Miss Dorothy Davis; Membership,
Miss Jennie Shamos; Publicity, Miss
Rose Cohn; Program, Miss Bess I.utskv;
Cultural, Miss Ozna Tontak; Athletic,
Miss Annie Cohen; Ways and Means,
Miss Lillian Esserman; Young Judea,
Miss Lilly Berchenko; Senior-Junior Re
lations, Miss Bessie Geffen; Happy Day
Fund, Miss Ida Mae Goldstein; Tele
phone, Miss Sarah Gershon.

ing year are as follows: President, Miss

Rabbi Joseph Karesh, former Grand
Aleph Godol of A.Z.A., will deliver a
public address in Atlanta on August 13th
his appearance being sponsored by the
Atlanta Chapter of A.Z.A. The subject
of his speech will be, ‘‘Israel’s Greatest
Enemy.”
Only twenty-four years of age, Rabbi
Karesh is one of the most accomplished
young leaders in America. He has a
bachelor of arts degree from the Uni
versity of San Francisco and from the
University of Minnesota. He was elected
Grand Aleph Godol of A.Z.A. at Pitts
burgh for the 1929-1930 term. He pre
sided over the International Convention
at Oakland in 1930 and remained in San
Francisco, Cal., where from 1930 to 193-
he served as assistant rabbi of Congre
gation Shearith Israel. From 1932-1933
he served as rabbi of Congregation Bikur
Cholitn, in San Jose, Cal., and has been re
elected for the coming year. Rabbi Karr*-
is also a member of the San Francisco
Lodge of B’nai B’rith.
As a speaker, Rabbi Karesh holds a
remarkable record. The Democratic
Party in South Carolina in 1928 made
him a member of their National Speak
er’s Bureau and sent him to campaign in
the middle west as the youngest speaker
on the bureau. He also won the Interna
tional Oratorical Contest of A.Z.A- > n
1929 at Memphis, Tenn.
Rabbi Karesh is the son of Rabbi and
