C LIMAXING fourteen
years of outstanding
achievement as a bene
factor of Jewish youth in the
South, the Southern Young
Judaea Association will con
vene in Atlanta, August 6-9 for
four days of business and enter
tainment. Approximately 250
delegates and visitors from the
various cities of the South are
expected to attend.
According to Sylvan A. Makover, convention
city chairman, the most complete program of ac
tivities possible has been arranged for this 14th
annual convention, to be known as the “Yod” or
“Mighty” convention. All plans seem to indicate
the most successful convention in Young Judaean
history. In addition to the regular business meet
ings, there will occur the Maccabiad athletic com
petitions, a dinner-dance, a theater party, a nov
elty dance, a sight-seeing tour of the city, a fare
well dance finale, a swimming party, and several
Young Judaea cultural projects.
The Maccabiad is an innovation in the program
of Young Judaea. It is to be modeled after the
Jewish Maccabiad, held for the first time last
year in Palestine where
Jewish athletes from all
countries of the world
vied for athletic honors
in contests similar to the
World Olympics. Each
Southern c i t v w i t h
Young Judaea clubs will
send representatives to
participate in the swim
ming races, diving con
tests, and the tennis tour
nament for both boys
and girls.
Also for the first time,
a plaque will be awarded
to the best all-around
club in the southern as
sociation. The plaque is
given by Sidney Parks,
president of this region,
in order to recognize out
standing clubs for their
work. The contest has
been in progress for
practically a year, and the final result will be an
nounced at the convention.
In order to entertain the visitors and delegates,
the convention six'ial arrangements committee has
planned a most elaborate series of affairs. 'The so
cial highlight of the convention will be a novelty
night club dance at Peachtree Gardens on the night
of August 7. This affair promises to lx* one of the
most brilliant affairs ever staged at a Y oung Ju
daea convention. Other social events include a
dinner-dance in the ballroom of the Jewish Educa
tional Alliance on the opening night, a theater
party at the Erlanger Theater on Tuesday night,
and a farewell dance at the Jewish Progressive
Club the final night of the convention.
The Southern Young Judaea Association is a
branch of National Y'oung Judaea, a Jewish youth
movement dedicated to the mental, moral and
physical development of young Jewry. Organized

By Simon Wonder
of New York as a part of the Zionist Organiza
tion of America, Y'oung Judaea has now become
national in scope with an active membership of
thousands of Jewish boys and girls. It purports to
foster a Jewish environment in the club and to
instill in the youth a love for Jewish history and
culture.
The first convention of the Southern region was
held in Memphis, Tenn., in 1920. Since that
time the Southern association has grown until it
now comprises more than 60 clubs with a mem
bership of 500 boys and girls in 16 Southern cities.
Permanent headquarters of the association are in
Atlanta.

of the panel. Other panel participants will include

A symposium on “The Y'oung Judaea Program

Serve the Community?” Other topics to be dis
cussed at the symposium are “Spreading Y oung
Judaea Through the South.” and “Coordinating
the Programs of Jewish Y outh Organization" in
the South.”
I hus, this convention, because it will contain
such innovations as the Maccabiad, the awa
cf the Parks plaque, a panel discussion on a n
teresting subject, and because of its well-rou ^
social events and business meetings and its -
•attendance has well earned its name ot
“Mighty Convention.”
