Until recently the Hitlerist movement among the Germans of Southwest Africa was given little or no attention but since Hit ler’s accession to power in Germany the movement is growing in strength and militancy among the Germans of South west Africa. 'Hie Nazis in Southwest Africa have resorted to window-smash ing, inciting speeches, boycotts, and in timidation of Jewish school-children. iTie Nazi sentiment received a tremendous impetus when President von Hindenburg wrote the chairman of the Deutsche Bund a letter in which he expressed satisfac tion that “you still have faith in the future of Germany. Thank you all for your national faith in Germany.” London—Public opinion in England must organize a more effective protest against Hitlerism than it has thus far, Lady Asquith, widow of former Premier Asquith, declared in the Sunday Dispatch, on the basis of reports she had received from experts on the situation of the German Jews. Lady Asquith points out that her source of information has con vinced her that new and more forceful protests are of the utmost necessity. Berlin—In order to achieve the release of Dr. Paul Goldmann, the German Jewish correspondent of the Vienna Neue Freie Presse, who was arrested here in retalia tion for the arrest of three German cor respondents in Vienna, Edgar Ansel Mowrer, Berlin correspondent of the Chi cago Daily News, has resigned as presi dent of the Foreign Press Association, and accepted a transfer to Tokio. Mr. Mowrer, winner of the 1933 Pulitzer prize for the best foreign correspondence, is the au thor of “Germany Turns the Clock Back,” an expose of Hitler’s Germany. Berlin—All persons not of the Teutonic or Aryan race as well as those who are married to non-Aryans will forever be barred from becoming German citizens under the terms of a new naturalization law now being drafted. Applications from non-Aryans will not be accepted and those seeking German citizenship will have to run the gauntlet of a third degree on political and personal matters. The only exceptions to the law are those who have rendered special services to the country. In view of the fact that the law cate gorically states that “an increase of pop ulation by addition of non-Aryans is not desirable,” the Jewish population is likely to become the first victims of the steriliza tion law which becomes effective Jan uary 1, 1934. The object of this law is to make impossible the propagation of nationally undesirable elements. Ostensi bly this applies to those suffering from various congenital ailments such as fee- ble-mindedness, insanity, epilepsy, blind ness, deafness and serious bodily deformi ties, but it is obvious that the law could easily be applied to Jews who in the eyes of the Nazis are “nationally undesirable elements.” ▼ Knock, Belgium—Deploring the un founded rumors concerning his future ac tivities, Professor Albert Einstein, who stopped here during an automobile trip from his temporary home at Le Coq, Belgian seaside resort, announced the fol lowing schedule of his obligations for the coming season: “First, I have a perma nent contract to lecture at the Abraham Flexner Institute at Princeton. Second, I have accepted a chair at the College de France in Paris. Third, I am en gaged to lecture in Madrid. The Paris and Madrid engagements are for April and May, 1934. Fourth, I have been in vited to lecture next spring at Christ College, Oxford. All other reports are devoid of foundation.” This statement appears to settle once and for all Pro fessor Einstein's position regarding the directorship of the Institute of Higher Mathematics at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. ▼ New York, N. Y.—The world-wide boycott of German goods among Jews and non-Jews has assumed such tremen dous proportions in Europe that the loss of trade to Germany, despite reports to the contrary, emanating from Nazi head quarters, has been terrific and is slowly but surely strangling German export trade. Samuel Frommer, president of the Fiommer Company of Indianapolis and member of the Chicago Stock Exchange, declared on his return here from a month s investigation in Europe in behalf of the B’nai B’rith and the Joint Dis tribution Committee. “The boycott has gone so far,” he said, “that the officials of Algiers, in Northern Africa, refused admittance to a large German liner car rying more than 500 tourists on the ground that the ship flew the swastika flag, and the Algiers authorities would not recognize it.” The boycott has been particularly effective in England, France, Holland, Italy, Egypt, Portugal, Greece, Jugoslavia and Switzerland. Berlin—The Hamburg senate has or dered the immediate demolition of the monument of Heinrich Heine, immorta German-Jewish poet, which stands in the Hamburg city park.
