ration and rank of cavaliere in the Order
of the Crown of Italy by Antonio Grot-
sardi, Italian consul-general i n
York, in behalf of King Victor Emanuel
II. The presentation was made during a
special concert of Italian music in Central
Park.
HEINRICH VON KAUFFMAN, Ger
man minister to the Argentine, because
of his Jewish origin has been recalled
by the Hitler government. Dr. Walter
Zechlin, CJerman ambassador to Ger
many, who recently protested the Jewish
boycott of German goods in Mexico, has
also been recalled because of his pre
vious prominence as a Socialist.
JAKOB WASSERMANN, internation
ally famous German Jewish novelist
whose works are now taboo in Germany,
has written a revised edition of the auto
biography of himself and will l>e published
in the fall. Wasscrmann’s life story, first
issued in 1921, has been rewritten in the
light of present conditions in Germany.
The 1921 edition discussed anti-Semitic
prejudice in Germany when Wassermann
was a boy. The title of the book will
be “My Life as German and Jew."
LEO FERRAUI), prominent Franco-
Jewish journalist, dramatist and play
wright, died in Paris, France, at the age
of 61. Ferraud, one of the editors of
the famous French daily Le Matin, was
regarded as one of the leading French
newspapermen. He was well known as
a writer on politics, art and current
topics. Many of his plays and novels
were among the most popular of their
day.
PROFESSOR BERNHARD ZONDEK,
the world-famous German-Jewish path
ologist, who was ousted from his position
in Germany, has accepted the director
ship of the Pathological Institute at the
Warsaw Jewish Hospital, according to a
report in the Moment. Professor Zondek,
a native of Lodz, became a recognized
authority in his specialty in Germany.
SELMA SEGAL, a Newark Jewish girl,
has been signed to appear in "Die \N al-
kuere,” this season at La Scala, the fa
mous opera house at Milan, Italy. Miss
Segal, who is now in Italy, was the first
American to sing at Milan s Dal V ermc
Theatre, and has just completed a number
of concerts for the Duches* of Aosta.
WALTER ORLOFF, the Brooklyn-Jew-
ish medical student who has been held
under arrest by the Nazis since July
1 on a charge of Communist activ
ity, is expected to be deported shortly.
Orioff had been held in jail for a month
before he was given a hearing as the
result of the intervention of George S.
Messersmith, American consul-general.
He was questioned in the presence of the
Consul-General by the German police.
After the hearing the American consul
general expressed confidence that OrlofT s
fate would be quickly decided. If he is
found guilty he is liable to a death pen
alty.
LOUIS UNTERMEYER, noted poet,
author and wealthy jewelry manufac
turer, was secretly married here to the
former Esther Antin, Toledo, attorney
and former judge. This is Mr. Unter-
meyer's third marital venture while the
new Mrs. Untermeyer has been married
twice before. She divorced her first hus
band, Dr. Henry Shaner, and her second
husband, Dr. Louis Ginsburg, died. The
new Mrs. Untermeyer was one of the
first women admitted to the Ohio bar and
the only one ever elected to a judgeship
in Toledo.
LEO. R. SACK, for the last 14 years
Washington correspondent of the Scripps-
Howard Newspapers, and one of the out
standing newspapermen of the country,
has been named American minister to
Costa Rica by President Roosevelt. At
the same time the President named State
Senator Fay Desportes of South Carolina,
a cousin of Bernard M. Baruch, as min
ister to Bolivia. Mr. Sack, who began
his journalistic career as a reporter in
San Antonio, has been a Washington
correspondent since 1915. He was the
author of the famous news story which
prompted the United States Senate to in
vestigate the senatorial election scandals
in Illinois and Pennsylvania which re
sulted in the dismissal from the Senate
of William S. Vare and Frank L. Smith.
Mr Sack, a frequent contributor to the
American Hebrew, is a prominent mem
ber of the Washington Temple. He is a
native of Mississippi.
CHANCELLOR HEINRICH BRUEN-
ING, former leader of the liquidated
Catholic Centre Party, is called on by
the Voelkische Beobachter to answer for
eign rumors charging him with action
detrimental to the Hitler government.
'Hie paper quotes Dutch sources which
declare that Dr. Brucning sought to dis
suade the Vatican from signing a con
cordat with the Nazi regime. Dr. Bruen-
ing has denied these rumors.
PROFESSOR MOSES GOMHKRG, of
the University of Michigan and Professor
Julius Stieglitz of the University of Chi
cago will he two of the 42 pioneers in
American chemistry who attended the
Columbian Exposition here in 1X93 to be
guests of honor at the dinner of Ameri
can Chemical Society to be held at the
Century of Progress Exposition September
14, in connection with the Society’s X6th
annual meeting. Hie leading chemists of
the world will join in paying tribute to
the “old guard" of American chemists
during whose lifetime there has arisen
the modern chemical industry in which
billions of dollars are invested.
MRS. MARCUS SLOSS, of San Fran
cisco, Lillian D. Wald and Mrs. Diney C.
Borg of New York are among the 56
women named by Mrs. Franklin D.
Roosevelt and Newton I). Baker to direct
the work of the National Woman’s Com
mittee of the 1933 mobilization for hu
man needs. The object of this campaign
is to rally public support for community
chests and other communal fund-raising
efforts for the relief of the unemployed
and needy.
THE HOUGHTON MIFFLIN COM
PANY, book publishers, which has an
nounced for Fall publication an English
translation of Hitler's autobiography
“My Battle" is charged “with an attempt
to cash in on the misery and catastrophe
of an important section of the human
family” by Louis Rittenberg, managing
editor of the American Hebrew, in an ar
ticle in the current issue. Mr. Rittenberg
says that “our efforts, through corre
spondence and editorial comment, having
failed to impress upon Houghton Mifflin
Company the perils of this vile book,
“we charge them with abetting Hitler
