(Continued from page 15)
BENITO MUSSOLINI took deliberate
pain* to demonstrate to the world that
Italian Fascism does not tolerate racial
and religious persecution, advocated,
through his newspaper, the creation of
an autonomous Jewish state in Palestine
and defence of Austria against the Nazi
menace which is indirectly a defense of
Austrian Jewry.
WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST,
newspaper publisher, declared in a tele
gram to Morris Margulies, secretary of
the Zionist Organization of America, that
the United States should welcome here
a due proportion of the Jews who are
being driven out of Germany, because “it
has always been the experience of this free
country that the people who have been
politically persecuted in foreign lands
have become, when received here, some
of our most devoted and most valuable
citizens.” Mr. Hearst’s telegram, which
appeared in all the Hearst papers, was in
reply to a communication from Mr. Mar
gulies expressing appreciation for the co
operation of the Hearst newspapers in the
Jewish pageant, “The Romance of a
People.” In his telegram Mr. Hearst also
said that “the Jews whom we have in
this country have rendered and are ren
dering great service to the country." He
added that ‘‘I hope the day will never
come when we will close our doors to
the peoples whose courage and idealism
and progressiveness have marked them
for persecution under the reactionary gov-
vernments of other alien lands."
RABBI HILDESH ELMER, Agudath
Israel leader of Germany, has just re
turned to Germany, after having made a
vain effort to dissuade Polish-Jewish
leaders from continuing the anti-German
boycott. Kahhi Hildeshcimer held a num
ber of conferences behind closed doors
with Jewish leaders here, but he was in
formed that the boycott would go on until
the Hitler regime discontinued its perse
cution of the Jews. Although it is be
lieved that he was sent here by the
German government, Rabbi Hildeshcimer
denied that he was acting as a deputy of
the Nazi government.
I HE tRF.IE PRESSE, Amsterdam
organ of the German refugees, has
announced that it is in possession of a
list of 35 prominent German emigres who
are to be murdered by the Nazi murder
bureau. The paper points out that Pro
fessor I heodore Lessing, whose name
headed the list, has already been mur
dered, and asks whether Professor Albert
Einstein, who is number two on the list,
would be next. According to the Freie
Presse, prices for the assassination of the
selected victims range from 10,000 to
20,000 marks.
REV. EVERETT CLINCHY, as direc
tor of the National Conference of Jews
and Christians, furthered progressive
gains in mutual understanding between
Jew and Christian, worked for the elimi
nation and the cause of anti-Jewish preju
dice and helped materially to mobilize the
Christians of America in a vast protest
against the anti-Semitic persecutions in
Germany. As was pointed out before,
scores of noted Christians throughout the
world have been outspoken in their pro
tests against the anti-Semitic terror in
Germany, and active urging and working
for inter-religious amity, in striving to
eliminate prejudice against the Jew wher
ever it has arisen.
PROFESSOR ALBERT EINSTEIN has
repudiated the use of his name by several
Communist organizations in England and
has announced that he had misunderstood
the real aims of “certain organizations
which are in truth nothing less than cam
ouflaged propaganda in the service of
Russian despotism.” Among the agencies
he referred to, and which he had aided,
were the Anti-War Movement and the
Workers’ International Relief. He also
took occasion to repeat his previous state
ment that he is not and never has been
a Communist.
