during the World War until America’s
entrance therein, when he was interned
in Germany. The role he played during
this period has never been completely
elucidated. This group has sought to
make active propaganda for Germany
among the American intellectuals and
business classes. At first it succeeded. So
completely were its real purposes dis
guised that it was able to secure the mem
bership of important American intellect
uals. Subsequently, when its real pur
poses were divulged, these Americans has
tily withdrew.
All these organizations are superseded
by a so-called brain trust, the leader
of which is the North German Lloyd of
ficial Mentzing, who issues official orders.
The Hamburg-American Line, as well,
seems to cooperate with the local Nazi
groups. It is known that it has placed its
steamship the “S. S. Resolute,” at the dis
posal of the "Friends of New Germany,”
for a dance on September 10th. Officers
of the liners of the latter, it is alleged,
attend meetings and visit the headquar
ters of the groups mentioned. One of the
more important leaders, whose name does
not appear publicly very often, is Count
Sauerma-Douglas, regarded as the head
of espionage activities. The latter, it is
stated, directs the spying activities on
Jewish families and Jewish organizations.
Too, he issues orders to Nazi spies func
tioning in labor and anti-facist organiza
tions. Many White Russians allegedly
are amongst his close assistants. White
Russians play an important role in the
espionage system because they are able
to attract more confidence as Russians
than as Germans. An active member of
the White Russians delegation in this ac
tivity is a chemist by the name of O.
Memzel.
Nazi propaganda is also contributed
by the so-called “Liberation” group
founded by William Dudley Pelley and
operating from Asheville, N. C. This
latter group’s official name is "The Silver
Shirts.” The organ of the “Silver Shirts”
is "Liberation.” The propaganda of this
group is rather more subtle and in every
issue of the publication, the views of rep
resentative Louis 'I'. McFadden, notorious
anti-Semite, are extolled. On June 3rd
the magazine carried an article by Dr.
Anna B. Sloane, which not only defends
the anti-Semitic program of Hitler, but
agitates against American Jews on the
same grounds.
Mr. l’ellev, it is alleged, is in constant
communication with Nazi headquarters in
New York on questions of tactics, etc., and
there seems to be little doubt that they are
linked in their anti-Semitic program.

policy. . . . Speaking about Washing
ton, let us tell you that President Roose
velt is issuing a message greeting the
Jewish Day of New York in which he
will give the strongest rebuke to Hitler
yet administered by the head of any gov
ernment. . . . Which in turn makes us
reveal to you that Herman Bernstein, who
resigned from his Ambassadorship to Al
bania, could have stayed on, if he had
wanted. ... It is rumored that a well-
known Jewish communal worker will be
offered the Albania post. . . . Lehman,
