Bucharest—Premier Ian G. Duca, who
has succeeded in forming a purely Lib
eral cabinet, has announced his intention
of suppressing the Anti-Semitic League
of Professor Cuza and its ally, the Iron
Guard, both of which have been respons
ible for recent anti-Jewish outrages. He
has already suppressed the Calendaral,
organ of the Roumanian Nazis. It has
been revealed that M. (yoga, leader of
the Roumanian Nazis, was barred from
the ne\v cabinet because he refused to
break off his relations with Hitler and to
discontinue his reactionary policy.
New York—A financial grant to the
Hebrew University by the Italian govern
ment to establish a chair in romance
languages and literature with special em
phasis on Italian has just been made, ac
cording to word received by Dr. A. S.
VV. Rosenbach, president of the American
Friends of the Hebrew University. Phi*
is the first grant by any government to
the Hebrew University. Announcement
was also made of the establishment of a
chair in agrarian economics, sponsored
by the Jewish National Fund.
Jersey City—For criminally libelling
Samuel Untermyer in a series of pamph
lets full of anti-Jewish material and pro-
Nazi propaganda, the Rev. Francis Gross
of Perth Amboy, an unfrocked minister
of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was in
dicted by the Hudson County Grand Jury.
I’he pamphlets and their contents were
called to Mr. Untermyer’s attention by J.
George Fredman, former national com
mander of the Jewish War Veterans, who
is a prominent Jersey City attorney. Mr.
Fredman acted as counsel for Mr. Unter
myer, with whom he is associated in the
American League for Defense of Jewish
Rights. The grand jury found numerous
passages in one pamphlet that reflected
on Mr. Untermyer’s reputation and that
were malicious.
Saloniki—Because the Greek govern
ment has decided to proclaim Yom Kip-
pur a legal holiday the anti-Semitic press
has renewed its anti-Jewish agitation and
charges that this is new evidence that
the Jews are the real rulers of the coun
try. I*he agitation became so menacing
that Governor Dragainis of Saloniki was
obliged to issue a public statement that
Jews have nothing to do with the plan
to make Yom Kippur a legal holiday. He
pointed out that the question was raised
by the Chamber of Commerce.

Berlin—Professor Arthur Wolf Mayer,
one of the outstanding surgeons of Ger
many, who had been a leader in the
persecution of Jewish physicians since the
advent of the Nazi regime, shot and killed
himself and his wife in his home when
he discovered that the Nazi officials had
uncovered evidence which showed that he
was descended from Jews on his mother’s
side. Dr. Meyer was the surgeon who
performed the operation of Gene Tun-
ney’s wife in Italy four years ago.
New York—Ancient tablets in archaic
Hebrew discovered three years ago by
French archeologists at Ras Shamra, on
the coast of Syria, contain writings dat
ing from 1400 B.C., nearly 600 years be
fore the earliest known Hebrew writings,
and show remarkable resemblances to
passages from the Old Testament, in
some instances being almost verbatim
with the Biblical text, according to Sir
Charles Marston, British archeologist, who
announced the decipherment of the tab
lets by French scholars. The writing on
the tablets refers to sacrifices mentioned
in the Books of Exodus, Leviticus, Num
bers and Deuteronomy and contain forty
definite links with Mosaic Code.
