(Continued from page 6) second coming of Jesus.” The integrity of the Bible as a fortress which may pro tect us from skeptical and cynical views is certainly established so far as the fun damentalist is concerned. "If we but read the Bible carefully, we find in it the solution to all our problems and the explanation of all our questions. In it are found predictions which estab lish definitely the authority and unity of the Bible. To whom but the Jew could scripture have referred when it said, ‘And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword among all the peoples whither the Lord shall lead thee away’? (Dt. 28:37, also Jer. 24:9 and Ezek. 5:14, 15). Is it not striking that the words byword in Dt. 28:37 and taunt in Jer. 24:9 are both a translation of the same Hebrew word Sheninaht Does not this impressively accurate prophecy prove that the Jew would l>e called sherni— merely as a taunt and a byword?" 'I*he use of scriptures is truly a remark able thing. The fundamentalist, thinking that all Jews are Zionists, proudly quotes scriptures to prove Zionism. "God inspired Theodore llerzl to found the Zionist Movement exactly twenty years before the Balfour Declaration so that the nations of the world might be prepared for it. At any other time the movement would have failed but Israel is God’s timepiece and so, as Ezekiel (36:24) prophesies: ‘I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all countries and will bring you into your own land’ or to quote Jeremiah (30:3), ‘and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers and they shall possess it.’ ” The feeling that the Jew as a business man is a cruel and heartless profiteer still persists and crops out every once in a while in conversation. The general feeling toward the Jew is far from friendly. The following incident, quite typical, illus trates the point. A woman and her six- year-old daughter were attracted by the appearance of the scrolls. The little girl pointed to the scrolls and asked, "What are these, Mother?” The mother did not know. Thereupon, I volunteered and told them about the scrolls and the ex hibit in general. As they left I over heard the girl say to her mother, "Gee, Mother, I didn’t know Jews could be as nice as that!" There were, of course, the condescending gentiles who informed me that “some of their best friends are J fv ,, or "I'm very glad to see this exhibit; m husband has a Jewish partner in b^, ness" or the Catholic Sisters who cons! dentially express the secret, "Yon kno»l I’ve always felt that we Jews and Cathl olics have the only true religion.’ g v J these, however, are in the minor!* \j Christians possess definite preju 'ict t 0 ward the Jew—views which are clearij influenced by the Christian environm»tJ and the fundamentalist Sunday School They look with disdain upon Judai*J and consider its doctrines and -ustonjJ outlandish, queer and unmodern, lfTlf cM them being deathly afraid of en?rrin K J Jewish house of worship. One of the most staggering rractionj one gets in speaking to many Christian! is the persistency of the blood libel coni cept and the association of the Jew vmJ animal sacrifice. The source of this mi«l information is hard to explain. The a«sr>l ciation of the Jew with the Levitical del scription offers a partial explanation it is extremely difficult to explain thJ presence of the blood libel concept ini asmuch as America has never witnesol an extensive blood-libel attack upon thJ Jew. Very often people walking into tr-l exhibit would begin a systematic searrJ under and around the scroll covering*! 1'pon being interrogated, they would re-1 ply “that they are looking for the knise*| and other instruments for the sacrifice j "How do you people arrange this mat! ter of sacrifice in these modern timr* i | Do you bring the animal to the Temple‘I I imagine it would be difficult these da\*l How do you get around it?" “Where is the receptacle for the! blood?" and "What do you sacrifice* I were ver\ common questions. Not interrogators who assumed the sacrificial system as an integral part of modern Ju-I daism were misled by the reading of Ie l viticus. Only too many displayed a per-J verted knowledge of the sacrificial system! apparently picked up in conversation! People observing the pointer for the scrnill often asked: "What is that dagger?" One young lady came over to me and asked me very confidentially in a manner that indicated she realized that the truth hurts: "Do you really sacrifice Christian children before the Passover?” When Ij uttered a strong denial, she merely »*id. "Well, doesn’t your Bible say that must sacrifice children?" Those who asked questions about an; mal and human sacrifice were at lea** somewhat informed in comparison to some of the others. 'ITiere are thousand' Christians whose ignorance of the JH is really a remarkable phenomenon, as the following questions attest: “What is Judaism?” “Do you believe like Christians?" "Do you believe the Bible?" "Do you have a Bible?” "Do you believe in Ciod?” "Where is your denomination found | "Which interpretation of the bapth® do you accept?” "When does the Millennium come ac cording to your calculations?" "What is a Jew?” An elderly maiden came in one di' and asked one of the hostesses, "Can show me a real Jew.” The hostess *B' swered, "Why, yes, I'm a Jewess." T* visitor sized up the hostess carefully after some apparently painful cogirati* produced the following gem: "Why, you ft no different than I am; I'm going to«° right back to my home in Johnstown. I nois, and tell my people that you Jews just like us!” There are, of course. fI lightened visitors who have seen Jews. interesting example is that of the bla rl faced youth who came over to me * n “ asked: "Are you a Jew?” “Yes.
