OUR ONLY SALVATION
-A Clarion Call for World Jewish. Unity
By Emil Ludwig
The famous Ger-
man-Jewish biog
rapher .now in this
country, warns in
this resounding
call, presented by
special permission
from the New
York Daily Mir
ror, that the solu
tion of the Jewish
problem can be
found only in the
union of all Jews
as a single nation.
EMIL LUDWIG
Only in union can any solution
be reached.
|F the Jews of Germany and the world
* ilti not learn of their own faults
trough this bloody catastrophe of the
•I tier terror, then they are not worth any
■n„re than the Germans themselves who
«rre also negligent in profiting by their
*n defeat.
I he one outstanding mistake the Jews
- jdr in Germany w as a tactless blunder
permitting the shameless forgery of
German accusations, at the time of
ir publication of the famous “The Wise
Men of Zion,” to go unchallenged. In
•ais fabrication the Jews of Germany,
tou will recall, were accused of plotting
'ii rapture the money markets of the
'rid. Subsequently, of course, this
'hole story was proved a gigantic for-
£fr\. but it failed to put the Jews on
their guard.
Suddenly, with horror and despair,
he Jews saw a land of culture rise up
gainst them and tear away from them
those hard-fought rights which took them
j t whole century of strife to achieve. It
«a* as though the American Negro
«<rt suddenly to be confronted with an
Jirt from Washington depriving him
t his liberty once again, shattering the
nmurtal figure of Lincoln (the most
Monumental spirit in all American his-
or\ who burned the essence and sub-
'tame of human equality into the Ameri-
an Constitution with a brand of fire
and blood. It was as though the un-
'ijchable holiness and singleness of
Meaning in that great document’s pur-
'r were suddenly to be blotted out.
j E'er since the dawn of constitutional
government, of the reflective impulse of
and order in civilized society, the
! vil rights of good citizens were never
I >fo e so cruelly threatened and ignobly
!l) rn away as the Hitler atrocities have
■>ndoned. Therefore, I cannot under
ran i how German Jews still remain
>'* Germans. Many of the refugees
I 1 'P ke with personally told me that they
I iot relish the notion of being classed
I *• a ‘‘minority” element (being Jewish),
"ot ather that they preferred still to
Armans in the nationalistic sense,
even though they were slaughtered,
driven, plagued and insulted.
This seeming lack of self-respect on
the part of the subjects of the Hitler
Hymn of Hate and banishment only
serves to make the Nazi the more trium
phant. Today, when minorities are de
fended by the world and will soon re
ceive the full status of respectable
strength, banishing even the term ‘‘Mi
nority” from the language of inter
national council ultimately, the Jews in
Germany should fight for their rights of
representation at Geneva as a minority
group and nation.
Lake the Switzerland of today, in many
ways the model for the new Europe.
Here minorities as such are unknown,
in spite of the fact, for example, that
one-third of thr country (Tessin) speak*
Italian, even though Italians constitute
not even five per cent of the total popu
lation. Yet there are EQUAL RIGHTS
for ALL Swiss! As the country’s guest
for over 25 years (and a thankful and
hopefully gratefully one, too) I was per
fectly welcome and enjoyed the coun
try’s hospitality with full freedom.
A nation which violates the spirit of
liberty and right in its citizenry and
even in its guest-citizenry (if you will)
also violates the moral basis of every
religious precept as well as all funda
mentals of humanity.
It was a gross mistake for some of the
German Jews to buy their freedom by
exporting German goods to Palestine
and thus being permitted to keep part
of their money. This means that if I
wished to avoid my torturer* and at
tempted to leave Germany I must buy
my freedotn in terms of cooking-pots,
piano* or automobiles!
Such a situation cannot last. And only
in the union of all Jews all over the
world in a national unit capable of re
presenting Jewry and sitting at Geneva
along with the fifty-two nations—as the
fifty-third nation, in fact—can any solu
tion be reached. THIS MUST AND
WILL BE DONE. Then and then only
will the Jews find it unnecessary to re
sort to begging as it did at the League
meeting when the Minister of Holland
spoke for them, as a human necessity.
When the Jews have thus united as a
nation, then only can they stand up with
respect as one among the nations of the
world, along with other minorities and
smaller nationals.
For the Jews, with their sixteen million
people, would thus bear more weight in
the council of the smaller nations and
in the world than their present scattered
strength permits. Next year the World
Congress of Jewry will stabilize and
unify the pitiably scattered vitality of
2,000 years of divided forces.
