€?>6e Southern Israelite VOL. X—NO. 3 For Southern] [Jewry ATLANTA, GA„ FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1934. Price: Five Cents SENATOR BYRD TO CORRECT CONDITIONS VIRGINIA HOTEL property leased from WAR DEPARTMENT Washington, D. C. (WNS)— President Roosevelt has before him a request from Senator Har ry F. Byrd (D.) of Virginia to use his influence to “correct the condition’’ at Old Point Comfort, Va., where the Hotel New Cham berlain, located on property leas ed from the War Department, is advertising that it welcomes only Christian guests. "If both Virginia and the Federal Government are impotent to deal with this situa tion, I will introduce a special bill in the Senate when the next Congress convenes," Seator Byrd declared. The situation became public when Rabbi Louis D. Mendoz of Norfolk, Va., protested against the hotel’s policy to the War De partment and to Senator Byrd and Senator Carter Glass. When asked to look into the matter, War Department officials, in the absence of Secretary of War, D?rn, who is on an inspection tour of Army posts, declined to comment but privately pointed out that there is no Federal or state law that would give the War De partment the right to interfere in the policies of companies leas ing Army property. The basis for the complaint against the Hotel New Chamber- lain, which stands on an Army reservation, is the fact that the hotel announces in bill-boards along the public highway that it caters to persons of Christian faith exclusively. Relying to Rab bi Mendoza’s protest, Senator Glass, Vinginia’s senior Senator, telegraphed as follows: “I think it totally inadmissable for the Federal (government to permit the sale of intoxicating liquors on government reserva tions in states which prohibit such sales, and I think it an out rage for any institution enjoying government privileges to discrim inate against any religious sect.” In his request for Presidential action, Senator Byrd cited Raibbi Mendoza’s protest and referred to the Rabbi, as “a distinguished Virginian.” The Richmond Times-Dispatch, one of the leading newspapers of the South, in an editorial entitled Religious Prejudice,” rapped the Hotel New Chamberlain for hav ing ‘violated the spirit of Ameri can institutions and laid itself open to severe public condemn ation.” School Established By Protestant Groups Cincinnati (WNS)—Dr. L. The officers of the Joint Dis tribution Committee and the American Palestine Campaign are participating in these con ferences, their views being bas ed on the experience of the 1934 United Jewish Appeal that is now coming to a close. Although these discussions a»e of a private character, it is no secret that among both the Zi onists and the J. D. C. forces there are those demanding se parate campaigns next year. Should the views of these individuals be accepted, it would be disastrous for the communal health of American Jewry. The Jewish eommunity everywhere has reached the point where it does not have the strength or the. resources or the available leadership to con duct two drives for purposes similar in intent. The Zionists contend that the ideological significance of Palestine has not “been sufficiently exploited in the United Jewish Appeal. The Joint Distribution Commit tee claims that it could obtain larger funds for . its work through an independent cam paign. Neither of thes views has in trinsic merit. The develop ments in Palestine speak elo quently for themselves. Every objective student of the Jew ish situation recognizes that Palestine has a primary place in providing a haven for Ger man Jews. As regards the in come question, the fact is that the United Jewish Appeal won the imagination of the Jewish community because it repre sented harmony and common effort . Without that stimulus, American Jewry would never have been brought to respond as satisfactorily as it did. The position of German Jewry is becoming worse and not bet ter. Their efforts at rehabila- tion will not be furthered if American Jewery’s support is frittered away in friction. Felix M. Warburg, Chair man of the United States Ap peal, was principally respons ible for bringing the Palestine and JDC groups together into the United Jewish Appeal. His calm persuasiveness and his sense of the fitness of things are required again, so that he may convince all concerned that American Jewry wants union fund-raising as it does in every other aspect of the German Jewish problem. Police Raid Illegal Nazi Meeting In New Jersey Elizabeth, N. J. (WNS)—A po lice raid on an illegal meeting of the Friends of the New Germany resulted in the arrest of fourteen Nazis who are being held on charges of disorderly conduct. Tipped off to the meeting, the police broke into the hall and took the fourteen into custody on a charge of participating in a gath ering in violation of an order by the police last year prohibiting Nazi meetings in Elizabeth. Berne, Switzerland (WNS)—The so-called “Proctocols of the Elders of Zion,” the textbook of every modern anti - Semitic movement, are nothing but shameless and en tirely unfounded libels concocted with the one object of arousing the masses of the world against the Jews. This, in brief, was the ver dict of the libel suit brought by the Swiss Federation of Jewish Com munities and the Swiss Zionist Federation against the Swiss Nazi Party and Dr. A. Zander, editor, of the Swiss Nazi paper, Iron Broom, which printed articles upholding the “Proctocols” as fact. The report, fully documented and the product of painstaking re search was prepared by H, Lussly, an expert retained by the court to study all the facts in the case, and made public just as the historic ac tion opened. The first witness sche duled to appear was Dr. Chaim Weizmann who is to give the court an exposition of the ideals and purposes of Zionism. The Iron Broom had published an article citing an alleged article by Rabbi Marcus Ehrenpreis, chief rabbi of Sweden, to prove that the organiz ation of the first world Zionist Congress in 1897 was in reality the beginning of a secret world Jew ish government, one of the char—* ges in the Proctocols. Dr. Ehren preis will testify that he never wrote such an article. Scores of world-famous Jews and non-Jews, among Jhem Paul Miliu kov, former Russian foreign minis ter, Henri Sliosberg, and Vladimir Burtzev, Russian editor and foe of Czarism, are here to testify for the prosecution. One of the most im portant witnesses for the prosecu tion will be M. Duchlaux, a French man who served in the Russian ar my and was personally acquainted with M. Nilue, the Russian reac tionary who first made the “Proc tocols” public. Duchalaux will tes tify that he saw the original manu script of the “Proctocols” as con cocted by Nilus who wrote them as part of the Czarist government’s campaign against the Jews. World Jewry is anxiously watch ing the proceedings here because they are expected to establish once and for all that the “Proctocols” are forgeries. The prosecution will show that the “Proctocols” are plagiarisms of an essay called “Di alogues in Hades between Michia- velli and Montesquieu” written in 1864 by Maurice Joly, a French lawyer, as a criticism against the dictatorship of Napoleon III. Only slight differences in text exist be tween the “Dialogues” and the “Proctocols.” In the latter so-called Jewish elders are substituted for Michiavelli who speaks in the name of Napoleon. On the basis of a translation of Joly’s essay, Nilus concocted the “Proctocols” and published them in 1905. Since then they have appeared throughout the world. In 1921 the London Times investigated the “Proctocols” and found them to be a complete forg ery. Berne, Switzerland (WNS)— That the “Protocols of the El ders [of Zion/’ notorious docu ment purporting to prove Jewish aspirations to world domination, are a forgery brought out by Rus- (Continued on page eight)
