Xew York (WNS)—A scientific
j sociological study of the Jewish
* pie, its charactersitics and feel-
f S F must be made before an in
telligent solution of the Jewish
problem can be reached, it w a s
agreed by all speakers who discus
sed the role of research in solving
Jewish problems at the Conference
Jewish Relations. All speakers
agreed, however, that assimilation
was out of the question. Professor
Jerome Michael of Columbia Uni
versity warned that knowledge, the
direct end of research, might be fu
tile if not applied by leaders who
were wise and good as well as
earned. Professor Salo Baron, al-
«o of Columbia, emphasized the
importance of a “knowledge of our
historical heritage” as a prerequi
site to maintenance of a Jewish
cultural unity. Dr. Edward Sapir,
professor of anthropology at Yale
University, was sharply attacked
by Dr. Morris Raphael Cohen, pro
fessor of philosophy at City Col
lege, after he had declared that the
problem of the Jew of how to live
with other people was basically so
ciological and its solution was
doomed to frustration so long as
the Jew considered himself differ
ent from others in some mystic
sense. Professor Cohen maintained
that it was not incumbent upon
any group to be normal and that
all that the Jewish people desired
was the opportunity to live the
life it was fitted for.
Sons of Moslem Father
And Jewish Mother
Are Circumcised
New York (WNS)—Three boys,
tons of a Moslem father and a
Jewish mother, ranging from five
years to six months in age, were
circumcised here, with the full per
mission of their father who wants
them to be raised as Jews. The
boys are Ibrahim, five, Tomar,
three, and Turgok, six months, sons
of Mr. and Mrs. Mohammed Hus
sein of Rivington Street, New York.
The mother of the children, Nafisia
Hussein, is in the Brooklyn Hospi
tal for the Insane as a result of a
nervous collapse she suffered when
her oldest son was nearly killed by
an automobile. Because Hussein has
been jobless for nearly a year, the
children have been placed in the
Israel Hospital as the result of an
investigation by doctors of the city
relief bureau. When the physicians
of the Israel Orphan Asylum ex
amined them, it was disclosed that
mey had not been circumcised. The
Husseins are natives of Turkey.

Town Gives 100 Per
Cent Response To
Refugee Campaign
Fairmont, W. Va—A record of
giving believed to be unparalleled
among the Jewish communities of
the United States was registered
here this week as Fairmont pro
vided a 100 per cent response in a
campaign on behalf of the United
Jewish Appeal, which is seeking to
raise $3,250,000 nationally for re
lief and rehabilitation.
Every Jewish family in this city,
whose total Jewish population is
140, made a contribution to the cam
paign, according to a report issued
by Harry N. Pollock and Bert S.
Leopold, officers of the drive.
It is believed that Fairmont’s ra
tio of gifts represents the largest
per capita of self-taxation on be
half of the United Jewish Appeal
which has yet been recorded. A
number of the Jewish families were
hard-hit by the economic conditions
which have recently prevailed in
this section of the country, but not
even these families abstained from
joining in the effort to give aid to
the Jews of Germany and other
lands.
The United Jewish Appeal effort
in this city was sponsored by the
local lodge of the Bnai Brith.
Feinberg Returns
To Rabbinate
New York (WNS)—In the be
lief that the modern rabbinate has
broadened its horizon and is play
ing an important role In the inter
pretation of current events, Rabbi
Abraham L. Feinberg, Hebrew Un
ion College graduate, who resigned
from Temple Israel, New York, five
years ago on the ground that the
rabbinate did not permit adequate
opportunity for expression on vital
economic problems, has accepted the
pulpit of Mt. Neboh Congregation,
New York. Since he left the rabbi
nate, Rabbi Feinberg gained na
tional fame as a radio singer under
the name of Anthony Frome, “Poet
Prince of the Air.” Rabbi Feinberg
was rabbi of Temple Israel from
1927 to 1930, and before that occu
pied pulpits in Niagara Falls and
Wheeling, West Virginia.

ALL GERMAN JEWS TO LOSE

Anthropologist
Backs Expose of
Nazi Race Fallacy
Chicago (WNS)—The Jews, who
are not a race in the biological
sense, but are a religious group
group with a set of traditions of
their own, are “just as good Cau
casians as the Germans,” Dr. Fay-
Cooper Cole head of the depart
ment of anthropology of the Uni
versity of Chicago, declared in en
dorsing the recent suggestion by
Dr. I. Zollschan of Czechoslovakia
that the Vatican take the initiative
in calling an international congress
of scientists to enlighten the world
on the question of race and to ex
pose the fallacy of the Nazi racial
theory. Ridiculing Nazi racial dog
mas, Dr. Cole asserted that “the
idea of a superior race is prepos
terous, scientifically speaking.” He
also said that there is no such thing
as a German race or an Aryan race,
and pointed out that even the Nor
dic race has been so diluted that
even in the Scandinavian countries
not fifty per cent of the people are
pure Nordics. Professor Edward B.
Reuter of the University of Iowa,
seconded Dr. Cole’s statements, as
serting that there is not “an iota
of biological evidence to sustain the
contention that the Nordic or any
race is superior to any other.
Masliansky Sails To
Settle In Palestine
New York (WNS)—Zvi Hirsch
Masliansky, whose lay preaching,
lecturing and educational activities
for forty years played an important
role in bringing home to large sec
tions of American Jewry the im
portance of Palestine is on his way
to Palestine to settle there perma
nently. Before leaving he was given
a testimonial dinner by the Hias
with whose immigrant aid activi
ties he had been identified for a
generation. Bom in Minsk seventy-
nine years ago, Masliansky came to
America in 1896, after a distinguish
ed career as a preacher and teacher
in Russia and England. He is a
vice-president of the Zionist Organ
ization of America.
JEWISH INSTITUTE TO JOIN IN
“NO MORE WAR” PARADE
New York (WNS)—The Jewish
Institute of Religion, of which Dr.
Stephen S. Wise is president, is
among the fifty religious and sec
ular organizations in New York

is expected that more than twenty
thousand people will march in the
parade.
German Ship Lines
Make False Reports
In Passenger Bookings
New York (WNlS)—Because the
anti-Nazi boycott has so curtailed
sailings on the ships of the North
German Lloyd and are finding it
necessary to fictionize their sail
ing lists in an effort to disseminate
the impression that important per
sonalities are still suing these ves
sels. This charge was made by the
Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League,
following disclosure that Mr. and
Mrs. James P. Warburg did not
sail on the Europa, as announced
by the German steamship lines, but
had sailed on the Aquitania. A
temporary sensation was created on
April 19th, when the press, on the
basis of news releases from the Ger
man lines, reported that Warburg,
who is a nephew of Felix M. War
burg, had sailed on the Bremen. It
was revealed later, however, that
he had cancelled his reservations.
A similar report appeared with re
gard to Kay Francis, screen actress,
who did not sail on the Europa,
as reports indicated.

Athletes Urged To
Leave Palestine
Jerusalem (WNS—Palcor Agen
cy)—An appeal to all foreign ath
letes who came to Palestine to par
ticipate in the second triennial Mac-
cabiad, world Jewish athletic games,
to leave the country at the expira
tion of their visas, was issued by
Lord Melchett, Honorary President
of the World Maccabee Association,
prior to his return to England. Lord
Melchett reminded the athletes that
before entering the country they
had given a pledge that they would
not attempt to stay permanently in
Palestine. He warned that a viola
tion of the pledge would endanger
the possibility of holding any fur
ther Jewish Olympic games in Pal
estine.
After paying tribute to “the great
sense of sportsmanship and good
comradeship and the high sense of
discipline” which had been display
ed in the games, which closed on
April Uth, Lord Melchett remind
ed the athletes from abroad, of
whom there were several thousand,
“that this same discipline and good
order must be maintained in our
departure.” He added: “I am well
aware that in the present condi
tions in Europe the desire for im
migration is tremendous, but it
must be clear to all Maccabis that
this festival cannot continue if it
is to be made the occasion for in
fraction of the laws of Palestine.”
Celebrate Seventy-fifth
Anniversary of Alliance
Israelite Universelle
Paris (WNS)—Extensive plans
are being made here to celebrate
the seventy-fifth anniversary of Die
founding of the Alliance Israelite
Universelle on May 16th. The Al
liance, the first of the great Jewish
representative and defense bodies,
was created in I860 as an out
growth of the Damascus libel in
Syria and the Mortara affair of
1859. Adolphe Cremeux, noted
French statesman, was the first
president.
HEBREW WRITERS CONFER
ENCE OPENS
Tel Aviv (WNS—Palcor Agency)
—The annual conference of the He
brew Writers Association of Pales
tine opened here with Dr. Nehum
Sokolow, president of the Jewish
Agency for Palestine, delivering the
principal address. He reviewed the
position of the Tarbuth Hebrew
schools in Europe and the status of
Hebrew literature.
Berlin (WNS)—On the heels of
a warning to the Jews of the world
by Der Angriff, organ of Propa
ganda Minister Goebbels, that
henceforth Jews abroad will be re
sponsible for whatever happens to
the German Jews, Dr. Wilhelm
Frick, minister of the interior, an
nounced that the new program for
reforming the German political sys
tem will rigorously exclude all Jews
and enemies of the Nazi party from
German citizenship, regardless of
whether they were born in Ger
many. In an interview in the Ber
liner Nachtausgabe, Frick declared
that when the new law comes into
effect Germans will not be bom
citizens, but will have to acquire
it. This new conception of citizen
ship, based on the Nazi race prin
ciple, will deprive all Jews of their
citizenship, reduce them to the
status of subjects, and prohibit
them from voting or bearing arms.
The new citizenship laws affect not
only Jews but all non-Aryans,
meaning persons with one Jewish
grandparents, as well as opponents
and critics of the Nazi party. In
addition to the Jews, some 3,000,000
German Christians, one of whose
grandparents was of Jewish blood
or whose spouses are Jewish, will
be relegated to the status of for
eigners.
550,000 Jews to Be Deprived of
Citizenship
Dr. Frick’s announcement indi
cates that the Nazis are preparing
to carry out another cardinal point
in the Nazi program with regard
to Jews. The twenty-five points of
the Nazi platform adopted on Feb
ruary 26, 1920, declared that “no
Jew may be a member of the na
tion.” Hitler, in his autobiography,
“Mein Kampf,” wrote that the Ger
man national state should divide its
inhabitants into three classes—state
citizens, Btate subjects and foreign
ers, with citizenship reserved to
those belonging to the Aryan race.
In outlining the forthcoming law,
Frick explained that all citizens will
have to take an oath of personal
■oyalty to Hitler. His statement
that enemies of the Nazi state will
be deprived of their citizenship is
regarded as a warning to Protest
ant and Catholic clergymen who
have refused to bow to Hitlerism.
Frick said that the new citizenship
law “imposes more critical stand
ards on everybody who is or who
wants to be a German citizen. Ger
man citizenship in the future no
longer will be acquired purely by
birth, or by the customary admin
istrative act or payment of a sum
of money, as formerly was the case,
when one could obtain citizenship
very much as one would obtain
membership in a club. German cit
izenship, according to the will of
Der Fuehrer, will be the highest
right and papers conferring citi
zenship will be the most precious
documents that a German can ac
quire in his whole life. German cit
izenship must be an honor which
a member of the German race can
obtain only by service for the peo
ple and the state. The road to all
public offices in the party and the
state will be open to every German
only if the bearer will enter in the
fighting under the movement, in
the serpice and the honor of the
people and the Reich as an arms
bearer of the nation. German citi
zenship will be confirmed as a sol
emn act and holy oath to the Ger
man commonwealth and the Ger
man Fuehrer, and it will be denied
to all unworthy persons and all ene
mies of the state.”
