World Congress: HEADS new group

p r> Wise Denies Receiving
Threatening Letters
in Geneva
Geneva (WNS-Palcor Agency)—
The World Jewish Congress will
become a permanent organization
carrying that name, it was decided
here. A proposal made by Dr. Ste
phen Wise, which was adopted by
the delegates, provided that the
following formula indicating the
na me. functions and authority of
the Congress be accepted with the
understanding that the incoming
Executive Committee would edit it:
"The name of this organization or
body shall be the World Jewish
Congress. Its object is to form a
voluntary cooperative union of
Jewish communities and organiza
tions of the world in order to act
on behalf of world Jewry in rela
tion to common Jewish problems.”
Dr. Stephen S. Wise denied that
he had received threatening letters
in Geneva, either from Germany
or anywhere else, as had been re
ported abroad. He also denied that
the Congress delegates were in any
danger and that extra police
guards had been placed around the
Assembly Hall. He said that there
had been a clash between Commun
ists and Fascists in the vicinity,
but this had no relation to the Con
gress.
At its third session the Congress
heard a proposal from Leon Kubo-
witzki of Brussels that the Con
gress be elected for four years,
that it be summoned every two
years and that it be divided into
four sections: 1. Political. 2. So
cial and economic. 3. Organization,
information and propaganda. 4. Fi-

Haven For Refugees
London (WNS) — The South
American republic of Ecuador is
eager to welcome 10,000 Jewish
refugee families from Europe in
the next three years, and the
natural resources of the country
are such as to make the possi
bilities for such immigration
very favorable, it is reported by
E. C. Q. Henriques, noted en
gineer and communal worker,
w _Lo has just returned from a
visit to Ecuador. Mr. Henriques
declared that the government of
Ecuador declared itself ready to
give a million acres of land to
Jewish settlers and to exempt
such immigrants from all taxes
for the first three years, as well
as to pay their traveling expen
ses within the country.

‘Christian’ Conference Meets
(EXCLUSIVE TO THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE)
Asheville, N. C.—Anti-Semitism as violent as Third Reich
propaganda Hared into the open with the withdrawal of a
hirge group of dissenters from the National Conference of
Clergymen and Laymen in session here, and the subsequent
formation ot a new Conference which charged Jewry with
inciting Communism and hatching a plot to “recrucify
Christ.”
Omission of the word “Christian” and the inclusion of
Jewish religious leaders, among them Rabbi Samuel Wrubel,
of Asheville, was given as the reason for the split in the ranks
of the five-day conference by the Rev. Charles Vaughn, of
Los Angeles, whose story of being attacked in his hotel room
was branded as a hoax by the police. ,

“We’re coming along fine. You

she s going around the State now
kingr to the women’s clubs and
getting them in the right frame of
mind for the other organizers to go

“How do the average people take

though, and they’re just waiting
for us to show them the way out.”
“The Chief is certainly the one
to do the job,” I led him on. “But
how can we keep abreast of every
thing the Jews are doing to hinder
us ?”
“Hell, that’s easy. Look here.”
McDonald pulled the latest copy
of the Jewish Transcript from his
desk drawer. “These Jew papers
are the best thing in the world for
us. They prove every single state
ment we make. Look at this.”
He pointed to Robert McDonald’s
article on the Christian Party.
“You can see how the dirty
are scared of us. All you have to
do to make one of ’em quiver is
mention the Party. You know, all
Jews are cowards. There isn’t one
of ’em that’d fight if he had to. Of
course some of them 11 fight once
in a while, but only when the odds
are with them or when there’s
about six to one.”
“Well, you know there’s one
thing about these times,” I offer
ed. “All of the people are lining up
on one side of the fence or the
other, but we’re getting ’em over
to our side now.”
“How do you do that? I asked.
McDonald winked. “Oh, we just
apply the heat to them a little.
That brings them out right away.
There was one fellow I had a little
trouble with just the other day.
He’d been around here, and said he
was going to join the Party. Then
he dropped away from us. Well,
yesterday I had a couple of the
bovs go out and see him. They
went to his house and turned on
the heat. Now he s a full-fledged
member.”
“Lord, Mac, what do you mean,
‘turned on the heat ? .
He winked again. Oh, we just
persuade them around to our side.

London (WNS)—The first at
tempt to combat anti-Semitic prop
aganda in Great Britain by means
of legal action was taken hern
when the publisher and printer of
The Fascist, organ of the Imperial
Fascist League, Were arrested here
and charged with “unlawfully
printing and publishing seditious
libel concef ning the Jewish people.”
The defendants are Arnold Leese,
head of the Imperial Fascist
League, and Walter Whitehead
printer of The Fascist.
The charges against them are
based on the publication of articles
accusing the Jews of ritual murder
against Christians and in other
ways libeling the Jews so as to
arouse ill will between religious
groups and “to create public mis
chief.”
The case is creating a sensation
throughout Great Britain. It is ex
pected to lead to a trial which will
expose the ramifications of anti-
Semitic propaganda in England.
of delegates who came to Asheville
for the National Conference were
“double-crossed.”. The size of the
assembly attending the sessions of
the Conference after the wide split
dwindled from 500 to approximate
ly 150 people, and bore out Dr.
Vaughn's statement that over 168
delegates had left the city, enraged
by the situation.
The National Conference of
Christian Clergymen and Laymen,
composed of delegates who seceded
from the five-day parley, launched
a bitter attack upon Jewry in ses
sions held at the First Christian
Church. Charges that the Jews are
“anti-Christ,” that they have
caused educational institutions to
abandon the reading of the Bible
in public, that they have unitedly
sought to and greatly succeeded in
destroying the Christian Sabbath,
that they have sponsored and paid
for the Russian Revolution, slay
ing and starving 30 000,000 white
Christians, that they have laid
Spain in waste at this time, and
through their leader (calling refer
ence to Leon Blum, Premier of
that country, were hurled openly.
Dr. Vaughn said that Reverend
Ralph Nollner, chairman of the ar
rangements for the original con
ference, with J. A. Lyon, New York
attorney, and Alvin Kartus, promi
nent Jewish attorney of Asheville
and a leader in B’nai B’rith, had
visited members of the Christian
Church board in an effort to pre
vent the separate conference from
holding their meetings there. Sub
sequent sessions of the rump group
attacked the original conference
for calling upon a Jewish attorney
(ostensibly Mr. Kartus).
A representative of the Pelley
organization (see Dan Swett’s ex
pose on this same page) who gave
his name as E. F. Elmhurst, of
New York, attended a meeting of
the secessioners and distributed
literature of an anti-Semitic na
ture in front qf the Christian
Church. Although informed that it
was not a Silver Shirt meeting, he
was seen later attending the ses
sions.

Jerusalem (WNS-Palcor Agency)
—Uniting in a condemnation of the
Palestine government, which is
charged with “negotiating with the
leaders of murderers” the Hebrew
press has published warnings that
unless the government provides
for adequate security the Jews, in
self-protection, will be forced to
rely on themselves to crush Arab
terrorism. The editorials were pro
voked by the Arab attacks on Jews
during the past week, one of the
bloodiest chapters in terrorism
since the disorders started on
April 19th. “We are for peace, but
if we are constrained to fight, we
are prepared,” it was declared by

Asheville, N. C.—A meeting of
outstanding Christian Clergymen
met at St. Louis July 15, 1936 un
der the auspices of an “American
Forward Movement” headed by a
Rev. Ralph Nollner, of Houston,
Texas, to determine ways and
means to crush the common enemy:
atheism and Communism. It was
decided then to call a national con
ference of clergymen and laymen
to meet at Asheville, N. C. from
August 12th to 16th. By a coinci
dence, shortly after, Dorothy
Thompson writing in her syndicat
ed column “On The Record,” in
listing numerous anti-Semitic or
ganizations named the “American
Forward Movement” headed by
Rev. Ralph E. Nollner as being too
anti-Semitic. To add to the mis
fortunes of Mr. Nollner, his name
and organization appeared in the
columns of the anti-Semitic week
ly edited by William Dudley Pelley
of “Silver Shirts” fame.
Mr. Nollner arriving in Asheville
the last few days of July called the
writer on the telephone, seeking
an appointment in order to explain
away the unfair charges, that his
organization was not anti-Semitic.
Meeting him at his headquarters,
Mr. Nollner opened his files to
prove that his organization was
nothing but a movement to fight
Communism, atheism, and to estab
lish religious righteousness in
America. When asked by the writ
er, why his official organ was
called explicitly the “Christian
American” and not some other non
sectarian name and why among his
supporters were listed a number of
well known anti-Semites, his ans
wer was a bit vague leaving a doubt
as to his original plans. He said,
however, to rectify the impression,
he was sending for Rabbis Abra
ham Feinberg and B. A. Tintner of
New York to appear as speakers
on the conference program. The
writer was asked to serve on the
local committee together with oth
er religious and lay leaders, and
since in this country a man is in
nocent until he is proven guilty,
the writer accepted in good faith
from a double standpoint: that of'
being opposed to Communism, and
to keep a wary eye on the proceed
ings.
The first session of this National
Clergymen and Laymen was poor
ly attended, when hundreds were
expected to be present. The very
atmosphere of the first session told
of a storm brewing somewhere. On
the following day, the thunder tore
loose. A number of the visiting
delegates broke away from the
original group with the loud cry
that they were betrayed. The dis
senters demanded to know why the
word “Christian” was omitted from
the Conference’s name, and why
Jews were permitted to participate
in the program. This dissenting
group was headed by Rev. Gerald
Winrod, of Wichita, Kansas, who
immediately called a meeting at a
local church under the auspices of
the National Conference of Christ
ian Clergymen and Laymen, whose
program was “Crush Communism
and the Jews.” This dissenting
group, which evidently had become
a vicious anti-Semitic movement,
placed speakers on their program
who denounced the Jews for spread
ing Communism in America and the
world over, who financed the Rus
sian Revolution and were responsi
ble for the deaths of 30,000,000
white Christian children.
