various limes interpreted as hav
ing their source in the Zionist and
non-Zionist philosophies of Jewish
life. Last year these two groups
came to a definite parting of the
ways on tlu* issue of the World
Jewish (’ongress. A bitter struggle
convulsed American Jewry for al
most the entire year, with both
sides making strenuous eil'orts to
win the support of a majority of
tlu* Jewish population. If the
W ashingtou conference of tlu*
American Jewish (’ongress, which
elected the American delegation to
the World Jewish (’ongress, mav
be regarded as a criterion, the* World
Jewish (’ongress idea won the final
victory. Ihe same differences of
opinion were also evident in the
attitude of these two groups on the
Herman Jewish situation and on
fund-raising efforts for Palestine
and for Eurojx'an relief. One of
the highlights of the year was the
unanimous election of Dr. Stephen
S. Wise to the presidency of the
Zionist Organization of America,
brought about by the crisis in
Palestine, which compelled Ameri
can Zionists to strengthen their
leadership. The Anglo Jewish press
made important strides, with new
publications appearing in many
fields.
The brown shadow of Hitlerism
hung over the American Jewish
scene no less than over Europe. It
was not only that fund-raising or
ganizations were primarily occupied
with furthering the exodus of
Jews from Naziland, but on practi
cally every other Jewish front the
Nazi situation left its imprint.
Herman Jewish refugees constitut
ed a large portion of the Herman
quota to the Tinted States, the
number admitted being expected
to approach 1,000 by the end of
lhoO. A number ot youngsters,
children of Nazi victims, were
adopted in American Jewish homes,
while Jewish college fraternities
and sororities undertook to provide
scholarships and room and board
lor Herman Jewish students ad
mitted to this country. T he Uni

emigre savants.
