leader guided boycott activities
against Nazi-made goods in America
during the year 5690. In a state
ment which he issued during the
year, the world learned what great
strides had been made by the or
ganized boycott, how German ex
ports had declined to such an
extent that bankruptcy threatened
the country.
France Welcomed Refugees. Up
holding her reputation as a coun
try of haven, France admitted
thousands of refugees from Ger
many and Roland, offered them
protection, later elected Jewish Leon

unfurled a banner of thanks on the
gateway to a refugee shelter pro
vided by the French government.

Anib Disorders. The grim spec
tre of violent death swooped down
upon Palestine once more in the
year 5696, reaped a bitter harvest
of death and destruction. Here,
British troops “gunned out” Arab
snipers in Jerusalem in an attempt
to quell Arab disorders. In the
background, the smoke from a
bursting shell marked new de
struction by Arab bandits. English
“tommies” from roof-top positions

The value of a single campaign,
combining all national and over
seas drives, was demonstrated in
Jewish History
Atlanta by Harold Hirsch, nation
ally known Jewish leader. Success
of the Atlanta Jewish Welfare Fund
('ampaign prompted Jewish leaders
throughout the country to launch
similar drives. In Nashville, Har
old Hirsch duplicated his Atlanta
success by guiding the 1936 cam
paign to victory.
The Boycott Marches On. Wo
men members of the Non-Sectarian
Anti-Nazi League held mass dem
onstrations in New York. Lead
ing in this protest parade was Mrs.
Louis Myers, general chairman.
Mass demonstrations by American
women against stores handling Nazi
goods contributed greatly to the
success of the boycott during 5696.
Three English Statesmen. In
January, headlines of the American
and Anglo-Jewish press proclaimed
the presence in the United States
of The Right Honorable Viscount
Bcarsted (left), The Right Hon
orable Sir Herbert Samuel (center),
and Simon Marks (right). Rumors
that preceded the visit of these dis-
inguished men told of a fantastic
plan to launch a mass exodus of
German Jewry, in return for which
world Jewry would buy Nazi goods.
Upon their arrival, the three Eng
lish leaders scotched the rumor,
attended the General Assembly of
the National Council of Jewish
Federations and Melfare Funds in
St. Ivouis, where they asked Ameri
can and British Jewries to raise
$10,000,000 and $5,000,000 respec
tively for a mass exodus of German
Jewry during 1936.

Soviet Russia during 5696 con
tinued to be {i shining example to
{ill other countries in its treatment
of racial minorities. The effective
measures by the government to
destroy the remnants of (V.arist

It can be said without exaggeration
that the Soviet Government prov

that if a government wills it anti-
Semitism can be uprooted.
I he new Soviet constitution cli
maxed a policy of democratic ad

wake the complete emancipation of
the remaining declassed Jews, open

social, .political and economic op-
port unity.

back loans advanced several years
ago by the Joint Distribution Com

in Birobidjan made steady progress.
