Senators Ask
Britain’s Aid
Urge England Not To Yield
To Arab Terrorism In
Palestine
Washington, D. C. (WNS).—
Pleas to Great Britain not to yield
to Arab terrorism in Palestine by
suspending Jewish immigration
were received here by the Wash
ington representative of the Zion
ist Organization of America from
Senators William King of Utah,
Arthur Capper of Kansas, David I.
Walsh of Massachusetts and Mor
ris Sheppard of New Jersey. Sena
tor King, who is president of the
American Palestine Committee,
founded some years ago under the
sponsorship of the late Vice-Presi
dent Charles Curtis, cabled his plea
from Porto Rico.
Recalling American interest in
the Palestine Mandate as a result
of President Wilson’s action in the
Peace Conference and the unani
mous adoption by Congress in 1922
of the Lodge-Fish Resolution, Sen
ator King said “I am convinced we
can rely on the good faith of Great
Britain to carry out her pledge to
the Jews and the League of Nations
for the establishment of the Jew
ish National Home in Palestine. I
therefore strongly urge that if
there has been any indecision or
lack of firmness by the local offi
cial in utilizing the resources at
hand to stop the terror, such a mis
take should be rectified by imme
diate and firm steps to protect
those Jews already in Palestine
and those who may hereafter seek
refuge there. The report that a
suspension of immigration is con
templated is unthinkable. That has
been the prime object of the Arab
terrorists and surely England will
not disclose weakness by yielding.
I sincerely hope Great Britain will
speedily vindicate out confidence
by immediate and effective action.”

German Decree
To Halt Exodus
Drain of Capital From Reich
Attributed To Emigra
tion of Ref ugees
Berlin (WNS)—A decree which
will in effect prohibit the emigra
tion of all Jews from Germany will
be one of the measures to be dis
cussed at the annual congress of
the Nazi party this month, it is
learned here. The entire Nazi press
is publishing articles suggesting to
the government that the drain of
capital resulting from the Jewish
exodus could be stemmed if Jew
ish emigration were halted. The
papers also point out that Jewish
refugees spread anti-Nazi propa
ganda, and that Jews should there
fore be prevented from leaving the
Reich. Informed observers believe
that these articles foreshadow offi
cial action along these lines.
New York (WNS)—To offset
the capital drain resulting from
the steady exodus of Jews, the
German government is offering
special inducements to Germans in
the United States and other coun
tries to return to the Reich, it was
revealed here by R. Frazer Potts,
executive vice president of the
New York Overseas Corporation,
who has arranged for the repatria
tion of 1,500 Germans in the last
two months. Potts said that the
inducement to Germans abroad is a
special rate for the conversion of
their dollars or other currencies
into wanderer marks, which are
valued at 4.018 to the dollar. Potts
said that this exchange system is
bringing thousands of Germans
back to the Reich and is also help
ing the Jews because it “holds up
the market for marks.”
Father Coughlin
Sweeping Investigation Reveals Propaganda
Groups in the U. S. Financed by Nazi Party
By The Rev. Dr. L. M. Birkhead
America, Fascism and anti-Semitism are at your door!
Movements in the direction of a Hitlerized America are
springing up in every section of the country. On every front
—economic, political, social and religious—the Fascists and
anti-Semites are recruiting their forces for a violent over
throw of all that has been considered the best in American
history—tolerance, liberty—social, political and religious—
the rights of minorities, and a decent respect for human per
sonality.
Therefore, it is my considered judgment (after a careful
survey of the gathering of the Fascist and anti-Semitic
forces) that Sinclair Lewis was no bogey-monger when he
wrote “It Can’t Happen Here." In fact, he displayed keen

Chicago (WNS)—A thinly veiled
threat that Father Coughlin’s Na
tional Union for Social Justice “will
not sit idly by” if the “lower
strata of Jews” continue their “in
sidious propaganda” to “the detri
ment of the better class of Jews,
who outnumber the former”—
“propaganda” to the effect that
“Christians are the only malefac
tors and that only Jews are hal
lowed with sanctity,” was made in
the current issue of Social Justice,
the radio priest’s weekly organ. Os
tensibly replying to attacks on
Father Coughlin because of his re

prophetic foresight and unusual so
cial and political insight. The
things that his prognosticating and
self-satisfied Vermont neighbors
said could not happen in America
are actually happening and there
is serious question as to whether,
now that Fascism and anti-Semit
ism are on the way, they can be
halted and suppressed.
A general criticism has been
made against Lewis’ novel to the
effect that the novelist did noth
ing hut reproduce an American va
riety of German Hitlerism. If Fas
cism (or Naziism) comes to Amer
ica, the critics say, it will be an
American invention and it will not
even have a European name.
These critics have over-looked
two important facts. First, the sig
nificant truth that man is an imi
tative animal and consequently
Fascism is more or less the same
thing wherever it has appeared.
The Fascist and anti-Seinitic
movements in America are imitat
ing to a marked degree the Euro
pean brands. For example, George
W. Christian, of Chattanooga, Ten
nessee, commander-in-chief of the
Crusader White Shirts, looks for
the day when Americans will sa
lute him with “Heil Christians.”
He is fond of referring to his White
Shirts as “Storrn Troopers.” There
are many other imitations of Euro
pean dictators, as we shall observe
in'our survey of American Fascism.
The other important fact gener
ally overlooked is that these Amer
ican Fascists and anti-Semitic
groups are all using European Nazi
literature in large quantities and
are being propagandized by and
subsidized by numerous European
Nazi organizations, including the
Nazi Party in Germany. I mean
that Nazi money is being used to
make America Fascist and anti-
Semitic.
I have been amazed at the extent
of the subsidies extended to propa
ganda for Fascism and anti-Semit
ism in the United States. Any one
who investigates the matter will be
likewise astounded. It is not dif
ficult to discover the activities of
the numerous organizations and
individuals which are carrying on

Stoller, Dropped From Olympic
Team, Denies Prejudice Motive
By Bernard Postal
New York (WNS)—“It was pol
itics, not prejudice; favoritism, not
anti-Semitism; coaches’ intrigues,
not discrimination; that prevented
me from running in the Olympic
Games.”
The speaker was Sam Stoller,
slight, pallid, dark-haired and soft-
spoken Jewish sprinter f r ° m c, "‘
cinnati, who together with Marty
Glickman of New York, was drop
ped from the American 490-meter
relay in a last minute shift. The
place was his cabin aboard the b. o.
President Roosevelt as the steamer
rarrving the first contingent of
the returning American Olympians
steamed up the North River.
Not given to talking, Stoller
was reluctant to discuss the sensa
tional incident of August 8th, at
Berlin. After chatting for a few
minutes about his experiences and
his record as a runner, I said to
him quite frankly: “Tell me, Sam,
do you believe you and Glickman
were barred from the 400-meter re
lay because you were Je ^ g 1 W h °^

been all sorts of ugly rumors

said “Until an hour before the race
I was assured that I would run. On
the way over Glickman, Mack Rob
inson, Foy Draper and 1 practiced
as a unit. In the Olympic Village,
Lawson Robertson, head track
coach, congratulated me on my
baton passing. But neither Robert
son nor Cromwell, his assistant,
had decided on the makeup of the
team. They were waiting to see how
the Americans would do in the 100
and 220-meter runs. When Owens
won these events, Robertson an
nounced time trials for the relay
with Glickman, Draper and myself
running. I won in 10.4. Glickman
was second and Draper a bad
third.
“Saturday morning Robertson
called a meeting of all the sprin
ters—Owens, Metcalfe, Robinson,
Draper, Glickman, Wyckoff and
myself.
“Wyckoff had been picked to run

said he had taken a back seat long
enough. He was going in forpoach

would come from being anchor man
would help him. Wyckoff, who also

Jerusalem (WNS-Paicor Agency)
The 20th week of violence in Pal
estine as part of an Arab campaign
to halt Jewish immigration was
ushered in with the fata! shooting
of the 78th Jewish victim of Arab
attacks, the wounding of two other
Jews, the uprooting of 12,000 trees
in one Jewish colony, and an or
ganized attack by 100 Arabs on
another Jewish colony, which suf
fered no casualties. The latest fa
tality is Joseph Afner, a Sharon
Valley bus driver who was caught
in a fusillade of shots from both
sides of the road as he drove past
Sarona, a German colony near Tel
Aviv. The bullets grazed a passen
ger who was with Afner, who was
killed instantly.
The tree destruction occurred at
Ness Ziona, where 25 dunams
(about six acres of trees were up
rooted by Arab vandals. The Jew
ish settlement of Menehemia in
lower Galillee was subjected to a
violent attack during the night by
an organized Arab band said to
have number 100, which surrounded
the colony from all sides and kept
up a bombardment of bullets that
continued for a half hour. The col
ony was protected by a handful of
Jewish Ghaffirs and watchmen who
held the attackers at bay until a
Transjordan frontier military pa
trol arrived. Joining forces, the de
fenders routed the assailants, who
are believed to have suffered a
number of casualties.

Remaining Families Safe But
Food Shortage Threatens
Starvation
Barcelona (WNS)—While the
Jews in Spanish Morocco, which ia
in the hands of the rebels, are suf
fering persecution, exploitation and
pogroms, the Jewish community
here is physically safe but econom
ically distraught, it was declared
by A. Glanczstein, vice-president of
the Barcelona kehillah, after a sur-
vey of the situation. Over 1,000
Jewish families, most of them
Greeks, Turks, Bulgarians Rouma
nians and Hungarians, have left
Barcelona since the outbreak of the
civil war. Those who have remained
are facing hunger because of the
growing shortage of food. All Jew-
ish-owned shops are closed.
New York (WNS)—In the event
of a Fascist triumph in the Span
ish civil war the Jews of Spain
will find themselves victims of a
re-enactment of the Expulsion of
1492. This in effect was the state
ment made by General Emilio Mo-
la, one of the leading Rebel com
manders, in a copyrighted inter
view with an Associated Press cor
respondent at Burgos, rebel head-
quarters. Asked by the corres
pondent “What plans have you for
the new Spanish state,” General
Mola answered frankly: “Spain
will be governed in a fashion which
will make it impossible for power
ever again to fall into the hands
of dirty politicians, Free Masons,
Jews and similar parasites on hu
man society.” General Mola’s state
ment confirms evidence in docu
ments seized in rebel headquarters
in Barcelona and Madrid.
