Thirty Congressmen and Senators
Uphold Cause of Homeland
Washington, D. C. (WNS)—Thirty Sen
ators and Congressmen, including Speaker
Bankhead and Senators Borah, McAdoo, Cap
per, Walsh and Tfdings, have issued state
ments stressing their support of the claims
of Palestine Jewry in the present crisis. In a
telegram signed by 17 Senators, Secretary of
State Hull was urged “to convey for us to
the representative of His Majesty’s govern
ment in the United States our hope that the
British government, as Mandatory for Pales
tine. will, undeterred by violence, fulfill the
obligation assumed in letter and spirit in un
dertaking trusteeship for the establishment
of the Jewish National Home in Palestine.”
Speaker William B. Bankhead of the House,
in his statement, expressed “the earnest hope
and confidence that Great Britain
will carry out in good faith its
pledge to observe the Mandate
guaranteeing the establishment of
the Jewish National Home in Pales
tine and the protection of Jewish
interests there. To do otherwise
would, in my opinion, be a grave
breach of faith on the part of a
great government which has a fine
record of observing its interna
tional obligations.”
Signed to the telegram to Secre
tary Hull were also Senators Bar
bour, New Jersey; Van Nuys, In
diana; Byrd, Virginia; Lonergan,
Connecticut; Sheppard, Texas; Mc-
Nary, Oregon; Davis, Penn.; Min
ton, Indiana; King, Utah; George,
Georgia; Bilbo, Miss.; and Clark,
Missouri. Other statements of a
similar nature were issued by Rep
resentatives Richards, North Car
olina; Dickstein, Sirovich, Leyser,
Fish, Celler, Sullivan, New York;
Citron, Kopplemann, Connecticut;
Fdlenbogen, Ransley, Penn.; Kahn,
California; and McCormack, Mas
sachusetts.

Colonial Office has announced.

Reich Jewry to
Pay Escape Tax
New German Decree Strikes
Panic As Payment Is Or
dered in Eight Days
Berlin (WNS)—Jews in Ger
many who have managed to retain
something of their businesses de
spite the Nazi boycott and other
forms of economic persecution now
face complete ruin as the result of
an order demanding that all Jews
deposit within eight days a sum
equal to the Reich escape tax which
they must pay if and when they
leave Germany. This tax is equiva
lent to 25 per cent of their total
property and the new order there
fore amounts to confiscation of 26
per cent of the property of all Jews.
The decree has created a panic in
Jewish circles where it is regard
ed as a move to prosecute the anti-
Jewish program through adminis
trative measures instead of through
new legislation. The text of the
order reads: “From your financial
condition it may be assumed that
you will transfer your domestic
residence abroad when opportunity
offers. To assure payment of the

the inter-religious good will ex
pressed at the sessions of the
Midwest Institute of Human Re

speakers at the final day’s ses

inent Catholic layman, cited the
two main sources of prejudice
as, first, “the implanting of
false ideas of religions, races,
people and institutions in the
minds of our youth,” and second,
“the profit that people make out
of prejudice.” Other speakers
who pleaded for inter-religious
tolerance and cooperation were
Dr. Felix Levy of Chicago, pres

of American Rabbis; Dr. James
M. Yard, executive secretary of
the Chicago Round Table of
Jews and Christians; Dr. W. E.
Garrison, Professor of Church

Detroit, Mich. (WNS)—“Hyster
ical or unthinking action will not
cure the curse of bigotry, prejudice
and ‘playboy’ antics which lead
adult men under the moon at night,
in hood and robe, to tinker with
the constitutional safeguards which
our forefathers vouchsafed nearly
150 years ago,” the Oakland Coun
ty Grand Jury declared in a report
denouncing the Black Legion as a
politically ambitious guerilla band
mentally incapable of wresting con
trol from established authority.
The report, which coincided with
the opening of the trial of 12 mem
bers of the Black Legion for mur
der, named 86 State, county and
city officials as members of the
order. Although the report said
that “no evidence of CTiminality
exists at the present time which
will substantiate a criminal charge
against the men named, their
names were made public in the
hope that “the light of publicity
will effectively dispel enthusiasm
for similar organizations, just as
secrecy, darkness and ignorance
further these sinister purposes.
Revealing that the national pass
word “Lixto” was to be issued on
September 16th to summon mem
bers of the Black Legion to action,
the report says it is not known
whether this action was to be a re
bellion against the government or
an effort to combat an alleged
Communist revolt, but notes that
“it is certain that the ‘iron guard’
was the inner unit recruited for
duty in some extraordinary capac
ity, perhaps, as it is claimed, to
take over government arsenals and
powder magazines when the spark
of revolution would inflame the
land. Limited to the witnesses to
be found in Oakland County and
such as may volunteer, the grand
jury has been unable to find any
evidence that the Black Legion is
an organization Fascist in charac
ter.
“Certain it is that the men who
are listed as officers of the Black
Legion in Oakland County, at the
present time, are not possessed of
even average intelligence upon gov
ernmental affairs and the ordinary
concerns of life. They are not
leaders, nor even worthy followers.
Born of political, race and religious
prejudice, masking its terroristic
activities with grim secrecy, the
Black Legion was formed in Ohio,
probably in 1931, by rebellious
members of the order of the
Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The
first 200 members were Klansmen
who dyed their robes black. As a
penalty the Ku Klux Klan revoked
the charter of the rebel group, and
a general edict was issued forbid
ding other Klansmen to dye their
robes.”

JUSTICE IDEAL
MARKS JEWISH
NEW YEAR 5697
New Year Begins Penitence Period
and Ends With Day of Atonement
The ideal of justice to all mankind marks
the prayers of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish
New Year, which will be observed by world
Jewry beginning Wednesday evening, Sep
tember 16th. Remembrance of God’s laws
and the obligation to all men is called for by
the sound of the Shofar, a traditional part of
the holiday ritual.
In olden days this festival marked the be
ginning of the agricultural and economic year
in Palestine. With the destruction of the
temple in Jerusalem and the dispersion of
the people, new customs were developed in
regard to worship. Instead of sacrifices of
fered on the altar the holiday has come to
mean a time of prayer and meditation, of
self-scrutiny, and of penitence. This inter
pretation of the holiday comes from
the rabbinical tradition that the
New Year commemorates the be
ginning of creation. Based upon
scriptural passages, it has become
the judgment day of the Jewish
year—the day upon which all peo
ple of the world pass in review be
fore their Creator for judgment.
Rosh Hashanah is a day on which
family ties are strengthened and
friendships are renewed. En
compassing the ideas of divine jus
tice and human responsibility the
day begins “The Ten Days of Peni
tence" which culminate in Yom
Kippur or the Day of Atonement.
During this period Jews are given
the opportunity to reflect on the
past year and to repent the wrongs
done. If the repentance is sincere,
forgiveness is attained on Yom
Kippur, the solemn festival of the
day of Atonement which closes the
penitential season.

Berlin (WNS) — David Lloyd
George, wartime prime minister of
Great Britain, will endeavor to pre
vail upon officials of the Nazi re
gime not to enact any additional
anti-Jewish legislation at the
forthcoming Nazi party congress,
it was learned from usually reliable
sources. Mr. Lloyd George is now
in Berlin to study Nazi methods of
employment. From the same
sources it was learned that the re
cent meeting between Premier Leon
Blum of France and Dr. Hjalmar
Schacht, German minister of econ
omics, has led to certain unofficial
negotiations looking to some modi

Third Reich.

Unease Felt in Bucharest As
King Carol Rewards
Vice-Premier
Bucharest (WNS)—New regula
tions, foreshadowing a vigorous
economic drive against Roumanian
Jewry, have been promulgated by
Valerius Popp, minister of com
merce, restricting the rights of
Jewish merchants. Further uneasi
ness has been aroused among Jews
here by the fact that Jon Inculetz,
vice-premier in the Fascistically
inclined cabinet, and a notorious
anti-Semitie, has been decorated by
King Carol. Nation-wide celebra
tions in anti-Semitic circles marked
the birthday of Alexander Cuza,
dean of Roumanian anti-Semites,
who was hailed as the teacher of
three generations of Roumanian
youth. Meanwhile the government
has dissolved a second training
camp of the anti-Semitie Iron
Guard at Carmen Sylva on the
Black Sea. Zelea Codreanu, head of
the Iron Guard, disbanded his fol
lowers upon receipt of a dissolu
tion order. He indicated that his
organization would not oppose dis
solution of the camps so long as it
was permitted to continue its pro
paganda activities.
New York (WNS)—From 1926
to 1936 there were 22,272 Jewish
emigrants from Roumania accord
ing to figures compiled by HIAS.
The largest Jewish emigration took
place in 1929, when 4,644 Jews left
Roumania. During the same period
18,888 Jews emigrated from Lith
uania.
