How would you like to test your
children on how much they know
about the past Jewish year? Inci
dentally, grown-ups may try it on
themselves. A novel way of getting
your children interested in their own
history.
THE EDITOR.
On the night of September 16th
Jews all over the world will cele
brate the coming of the New Year.
In the United States, in England,
in France, yes, even in the unhappy
countries of Germany and Poland
the synagogues and temples will
be orowded with devout worship
ers. To every Jewish boy and girl
from far and near we wish “L’sha-
nah tovah”—a very happy New
Year, and “may you be inscribed in
the Book of Life.”
This season of the New Year is
a time to look forward to the hopes
we hold for this coming year. It is
also a time to look back and ex
amine the events by which our fel
low Jews were affected during the
past year. Great leaders have pass
ed on, new leaders are being born,
the Jewish youth of Germany is
being led from cruel oppression to
a better and happier life in other
countries. A Jew guides the policies
of France, another makes an im
portant contribution to medical
science, to art, or to music. So we
chat with you for a few moments
and tell you all that we have seen
during the last twelve months. But
before you start reading try to ans
wer as many of these questions as
you can. If you get stuck, look up
the answers in the paragraphs cor
respondingly numbered.

AND HERE ARE THE ANSWERS
1. Eddie Cantor—a serious, earnest man who is one of the
finest and kindest philanthropists of our day, a man who, at
his own expense, is bringing 500 German Jewish children to
Palestine and is educating them there. Not content with this
generous gesture, he is soon to begin a tour of twenty Amer
ican cities in the interests of the Youth Aliyah (youth immi
gration). This is a movement sponsored by the Hadassah or
ganization to raise a large sum of money for the purpose of
bringing hundreds of unfor
tunate German Jewish chil
dren to Palestine.
2. In the city of New York
lives Roger W. Straus, one of
America’s outstanding Jewish
business men. He was grad
uated from Princeton, and
during the world war served
as Captain and Intelligence
Officer in Siberia. He has al
ways been actively interested
in Jewish charitable and edu
cational organizations, but of
late he has lent his efforts to
ward the development of bet
ter understanding and the
promotion of good will be
tween Jews and Christians.
This year, in recognition of
his outstanding work, Mr.
Straus was awarded the
American Hebrew Medal for
1935.
3. Last December, when

Thus they might have come to a
declaration that cast grave doubt
of the beneficence of the present
system; thus they might have giv
en a pain to leading members.
They were content to wring their
hands for the consciences of a few
in the next war in which most of
their own consciences (at present
so brave) will put on uniforms and
go marching to the slaughter to
thank God for enemies destroyed
and to plead for bigger heaps of
enemy dead.
So it was with consciences in the
last war.

signed as League of Nations High Commissioner for Ref
ugees, he uttered a bitter protest against the present German
policy toward Jews. For his devoted and invaluable services
as High Commissioner the editors of the Anglo-Jewish press
voted to award him the Gottheil medal, annually given by
Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. He was also awarded the honorary
degree of Doctor of Hebrew Law by the Hebrew Union Col
lege, rabbinical seminary in Cincinnati. (Turn to page 14)
