4. Perhaps you haven’t had much
time to read the newspapers dur
ing your summer vacation, but if
you’ve read them at all you know
that Leon Blum, a French Jew, has
become premier of France. This is
the highest government position in
that country and it is the first time
that France has had a Jewish prime
minister.
All over the world Jews rejoice
in this honor that has come to one
of their distinguished coreligion
ists. For Leon Blum, besides being
a great Btatesman, is an ardent and
loyal Jew. . . , .

tyrant. But in certain countries of
Europe—in Germany, Poland—the
fate of our fellow Jews is not so
happy.
The story of Hitler and his perse
cution of German Jews is well
known to you. Conditions continue
unchanged, but at least we are
cheered hy the news that various
relief organizations are helping
German Jews leave the land and
establish themselves elsewhere. In
Poland and other countries of East
ern Europe, too, terrible misfor
tunes befall the Jews.
Even in Palestine, haven of the
oppressed, there have been riots
with the Arabs. We know that the
generous and loyal men and women
who are developing Palestine and
other localities as new homes for
persecuted Jews will continue their
efforts until conditions right them
selves.

Dr. Meyerson Develops
New Suicide Remedy
Hanover, N. H. (WNS)—
Benzedrine, a medicine which
prevents suicide, stops nervous
stomach spasms and corrects
narcolepsy, a form of sleeping
sickness, was explained to the
American Psychological Asso
ciation by Dr. Abraham Myer-
son of the Boston State Hospital,
its inventor. Dr. Myerson claims
that his medicine eases the
strain of the modern tempo and
halts the suicide mood.

In minds made better by their pres
ence.”
Never a year goes by but that
some great man or woman dies and
leaves the world the fine heritage
of his or her deeds. All Jewry
mourned the death of Dr. Nahum
Sokolow, who passed away at his
Lqpdon home last June. A former
president of the World Zionist Or
ganization, a close friend of Theo
dor Herzl, the founder of the back-
to-Palestine movement, he had
worked long and hard for forty
years in the interest of Palestine
and the Zionist movement.
7. Your grandmothers and
grandfathers will vividly remember
the famous Dreyfus case, and even
you may have come across it in
your history books. Forty-two
years ago, in France, Colonel Al
fred Dreyfus, an officer in the
French army, was accused of be
traying French war secrets to the
Germans. Although he was inno
cent he was sentenced to the ter
rible French penal colony on Devil’s
Island because he was a Jew. Final
ly, through the influence of prom
inent men, among them the writer
Emile Zola, he was proven innocent
and was released. He fought for
France in the great world war of
1914-18, and he died last winter.
His colorful story in itself would
recall his life to the world, but
there is another reason why we re
member him. Theodor Herzl was
present in the courtyard of the
Ecole Militaire when Dreyfus was
sentenced, and he was so moved by
the betrayal of his fellow Jew that
then and there he resolved to build
a Jewish homeland in Palestine
where Jews would have all the
rights of citizens and where they
could not be unjustly treated by
their enemies.
8. You know what a fine thing
it is to have a good friend. The
Jewish people had such a friend in
Lord Reading of England, who died
in London last winter. Born Rufus
Daniel Isaacs, the son of a Jewish
merchant, he ran away from Lon
don at the age of fourteen and be
came a ship cabin boy. Later he
studied law, became an attorney,
and served for nine years as a Lib
eral member of the British parlia
ment. He was Lord Chief Justice
during the trying period of the
world war and in 1926 he was made
the first Marquess of Reading. All
his life he was interested in the re
building of Palestine as a home
land for the Jews and he played a
prominent part in the issuance of
the famous Balfour declaration
which announced to the world that
England was willing to let the Jews
establish a homeland in Palestine.
9. I suppose your mother has
told you how healthful spinach and
carrots are and that you must eat
them to grow big and strong. But
do you know that the reason they
are so good for you is that they
are filled with a substance known
as \ itamin A which builds up our
bodies and helps us fight sickness?
We are indebted to Dr. Lafayette
B. Mendel of Yale University, a
Jewish scientist, for this important
information. Dr. Mendel died dur
ing the past year, but his great
discovery will live forever as a
weapon against disease.
10. One of the finest institu
tions of modern Palestine is the
Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

world come here to study, and it

tional center. Recently two gener-

you that among the outfits still
dealing in German goods are Wool-

ous friends of the University have
contributed gifts that will help it
in its growth.
Mrs. Sol Rosenbloom of Pitts
burgh, Pa., who is well known for
her many gifts to Jewish institu
tions, gave a half million dollars
to the University for a new audi
torium, a new arts building and a
new institute of climatology and
science. Samuel Solov of Tel Aviv,
a widely known Jewish philan
thropist, has given $15,000 for a
dormitory, reading room and study
hall for the students. In this way
the students will be much more
comfortable in their surroundings
and will be able to do much better
work.
