Torture Prison
(Continued from Page 1)
commenting on the government’s
decision, the Socialist press bitter
ly assails the brutality of the In
quisition and declares “cursed be
forever the Inquisition and the
Jewish Mountain.”
The government press also
brings new reports of anti-Semitic
terror by the Fascists in Spanish
Morocco. According to these re
ports the Fascists have burned
synagogues, Talmud Torahs and
B’nai B’rith lodges. The prisons
are said to be full of Jews who
have been unable to meet the heavy
demands for funds from the Fascist
military authorities.

Ahavath Achim Plans
Midnite Holy Service
A special Selichoth service is an
nounced by Congregation Ahavath
Achim for midnight on Saturday,
September 12th. The meaning and
significance of the service will be
explained in a brief sermon by
Rabbi Harry H. Epstein, and Can
tor M. Landman, assisted by his
male quartet, will officiate.
For more than a thousand years
it has a custom in Israel to attend
Selichoth Services on Saturday
midnight just before the High Holi
days in an atmosphere of rever
ence, penitence and supplication.
The Selichoth is a collection of
many of the sublime penitential
prayers composed by some of the
great scholars and poets of the
Middle Ages such as Saadia Gaon,
Ibn Gabirol. Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Judah
Halevi. The supplications in the
Selichoth depict Jewish persecu
tion and misery and invoke the
“Lord of Forgiveness” to grant
mercy to repentant Israel.

GERMAN JEWRY FORCED
TO PAY ESCAPE TAX
(Continued from Page 1)
Reich escape tax due on your leav
ing Reich territory, amounting to
one-suarter of your property as
last ascertained, I herewith fix
against you, in accordance with
Paragraph 7 of the Reich Escape
Tax Ordinance (R. G. B. I., 1935,
page 393) security amounting to
Reichsmarks ... I request you to
render this security within eight
days, in the form prescribed by
Paragraph 132 of the Reich Ordi
nance, otherwise payment must be
enforced.”
The imposition of this tax inten
sified fears that restrictions
against non-Aryans will be aggra
vated by the Nazi Party Congress
now in session at Nuremberg. One
of the measures expected to be tak
en at Nuremberg is the depriva
tion of Jews of their passports,
which would render their emigra
tion from Germany impossible. It
is also believed that Jews will be
forbidden to engage in any real es
tate activity and will be barred
from bequeathing any of their
property.
