THE YEAR 5696 THROUGH THE HEADLINES
Hope For Tolerance and Peace Seen in
Review of Events of the Past Year
Terrorism, emigration, relief measures and disunity were
the four dominating factors in the Jewish scene during the
year 6696. Headlines in the Southern Israelite told the grim
news of the Arab uprising in Palestine, the new decrees rob
bing German Jewry of its remaining rights, the economic
persecution in Poland, and the growing tide of religious intol
erance in the United States?.
There was a brighter side in the news events of the year
that gave world Jewry new hope for the future. In America,
outstanding figures in public life spoke out fearlessly against
the oppression of minorities. The Christian clergy broke its
silence to deplore religious intolerance on several occasions.
In Soviet Russia, Australia, Czechoslovakia, Holland, Italy,
Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Switzerland, there
were no serious anti-Semitic disturbances. Leon Blum was
elected the first Jewish Premier of France, and severe meas
ures were taken against the Cross of Fire and other Fascist
groups. Great Britain indicated that she would treat agita
tors as subversive factions in the government, and extended
haven to refugees, many of whom in turn gave employment
to thousands.
