The Jews of Germany”
By Marvin Lowenthal
(.Jewish Publication Society)
umj 1 pre ^ ace to his new book,

makes The Jews of Germany” one
°J. “*? e m ° st significant treatments
of the Aryan myth that has yet
been written, and that out of a
vast bibliography of works on the
subject.
Jewish pioneers, Mrs. Lowenthal
finds, appeared in the first or sec
ond century of the Christian era,
following the invasion of the coun
try and the dispersal of barbarian
tribes by the Romans. Colorful
traders, beggars, gypsies, scholars,
they took root like strange oriental
herbiage in the soil of Germany,
beginning a saga that has seen
them rise to power among men
only to fall under the fury of or-
ganizedanti-Semitism, that has seen
them build great cities only to be
driven from their homes and exiled
to strange corners of the world.
Ever at the mercy of the slightest
change in the social order, they
transformed modern society and
thought in their ascendancy; per
secuted, the classes who were duped
mto hounding them felt the bubble
of economic hope burst with their
own bloody triumph.
Mr. Lowenthal, intent upon snow
ing the economic forces that recur
throughout the centuries in not al
ways recognizable form, devotes
little space to the Jew within the
confines of the Judengasse; that is
well, since his preoccupation with
the economic basis of persecution,
provides a clear picture of the im
pact made by organized anti-Sem
itism upon all classes in German
history.
Thus, in 1932, among the Klein-
burgertum and peasants, as with
their equivalent classes for centur
ies, Aryanism offered the perfect
faith, since monopoly capitalism
and Communism could offer
balm for patriotic wounds.
“Here,” says the author, “was
the perfect faith. It held out the
assurance of regeneration through
the doctrine of race election and
Aryan superiority ... It furnished
an intoxicating ritual with banners,
processions, hymns, fire-worship,
holy symbols, and revivalist meet
ings in which thousands of the
faithful could be reborn in the
blood of Teut and banish this world
of sin and trouble—the world of
reparations, Versailles guilt-claus
es, lost provinces, worthless bonds,
unemployment—in strong draughts
of sacred oratory . . .”
The Jews of Germany” in turn
will offer no balm to those of us
who still continue to ignore eco

Under the Swastika”
By John B. Holt
(University of North Carolina
Press)
The value to future historians of
a viewpoint that charts a strong
unwavering course in an ocean of
national feeling, of an eye that h
almost incurious in its refusal to
look through the lens of world
opinion, may be seen in John B.
Holt s record of four years spent in
the Germany of 1931-35. ‘Tinder
the Swastika,” unlike the glamour
ized, personal histories of Vincent
Sheean, John Gunther and others
of the new school, is straight re
porting, having for its chief pro
tagonist the German masses. As
such, and possessed of indisputa
ble dramatic value, it earns for it
self a unique place among the
books that have been written about
the frenzied Germany of the Third
Reich.
In 1930, when John B. Holt came
