A YEAR OF TURMOIL
(Continued from Page 7)
On the other hand: Leon Blum, a
Jew, has been chosen Premier of
France. There was remonstrance
against his appointment in the first
days of his administration. Appar
ently this feeling has subsided.
Herbert H. Lehman, despite his
determination to retire from public
life, virtually has been forced by a
sense of loyalty and duty to accept
nomination for the third time as
Governor of New York. Governor
Lehman divided honors with Pres
ident Roosevelt in the convention
which renominated the President.
Every state in the Union acclaimed
him as its choice for Governor of
New York. Nothing like this com
pliment has ever been paid any
man in the history of the United
States.
To everyone he is known to be an
outstanding Jew.
Henry Horner, despite the com
bined opposition of the political
i bosses both national and state, was
j renominated as Governor of Illinois
I by an overwhelming vote. The very
: sections of the state which voted
against him in the prior election—
well understood, because of his re
ligion—piled up the largest major-
! ities in his favor.
To all men, Henry Horner is
known as an upstanding Jew.
So we see, just as the Jew is an
anomaly, so is his position in the
world anomalous.
Our faith in the Guardian who
slumbers not nor sleepeth impels
us to believe that out of the pres
ent unrest in which the Jew is
being sorely chastised, a better or
der will emerge. To be sure, the
signs are not now visible, but I re
peat what I have often said, “God
works in mysterious ways His
wonders to perform.”

Ben-Gavriel, the noted Palestinian poet, rvalked along the awe-inspiring
Avenue of Trees (above) in Mishmar Ha’emek woods, the scene of twelve in
cendiary attempts by Arab vandals, and penned this stirring elegy to the trees
that have been burned and uprooted since the beginning of the Arab disorders.
Throughout the Holy Land, charred embers testify to luxurious forest
growths that were planted by pioneers only to fall under the fury of Arab ter
rorism.
A campaign for funds to plant 100,000 new trees is now in progress under
the auspices of the Jewish National Fund of America.
The wood is gone, the trees become grey ash,
Within one night died the work of years.
The shots the brigands fired
Missed the mark. But the fire they laid
Seared our hearts.
From out this night of murder’s crimson sky
God’s tear fell on the newly hardened rock
Into our hearts.
Do you remember when we carried water
On tired backs and watered them,
The tiny trees of our hardy hope?
How tender green the other year
O'er crept the yellow mountainside,
How in the evening we still raked the earth
After our hard days work?
How lovingly we caressed our trees
The mornings we went to the fields.
Do you remember?
Do you remember how year after year
The green rose up
Grew up into a forest, to first shadow
Over the burning yellow shadowless vale ?
How under trees we sang in the full moon,
In our forest,
How we stretched our tired bodies
Upon our ground in our own green wood.
Do you remember?
The murdered trees we shall inter.
But our hands now holding rifles
Will swing the rake anew
In the new morning when new trees we’ll plant
On yellow mountainsides.
Best Wishes for the New Year
