which we as Americans may well be
proud. It represents every element
of the Jewish community. Its ben

to Jews but to non-Jews.
“Here is an institution which is
so typically American in its ideals,
which makes no distinction, which
seeks only to help those who need
help most, which has rendered serv
ice in foreign lands to men, women
and children of all faiths and
creeds. Its platform of human serv
ice is one upon which we can all
stand.’’

ant, the prejudiced, the violent. The
world they are trying to will into
being will be a very different
world. The civilization they would
build is not the kind to which we
aspire.
Men of good will and understand
ing in every land, who realize that
the roots of the ideals by which we
live are being cut down, strive to
avert the disaster which is overtak
ing us. Even in dark Germany,
there are men of good will. We
heard their courageous voices again
just a short time ago when the
Lutheran clergy, addressing itself
to Hitler, said:
“When, within the compass of
the Nazi view of life, an Anti-Sem
itism is forced on the Christian
that binds him to hatred of the
Jew, the Christian injunction to
love one’s neighbor still stands.”
Men and women of good will,
how much depends on you. You
and your ideals have lost ground
these last few years. What does
the new year, which we, as Jews,
reckon as 5697, hold in store? Can
we assume that, as in the case of
the crops, the cycle will ultimately
and inevitably turn; that there will
be a rebirth; that the ideals of de
mocracy, of liberty of conscience,
of speech, of a world without war,
of fraternity of men—that these
ideals so fundamental to our civili
zation will flourish again? Not in
evitably. Only by dint of great ef
fort and sacrifice. And in that ef
fort and sacrifice we, as Jewish
women, must take our part—for it
is revealed to us as in a blinding
light how our fate as Jews hangs
on the triumph of these ideals.
What is it that we as Jewish
women in a generation of destiny
can do? What counts? An under
standing of what is at stake—there
is no room for indifference—confu
sion — defeatism—and the wisdom
to see the importance of working
together. In pooling and organizing
our efforts lies our strength.
May the New Year we are about
to celebrate bring us that under
standing and that wisdom.
Best Wishes
