Courageous Qerman Boy, Away
From Home, Finds Opportunity
By Marianne Shultz
The story of Willie Uhlfelder, a
young German Jewish boy who has
found opportunity in Atlanta, of
fers a challenge to American youth.
Economic conditions in Germany
made it impossible for Willi Uhl
felder to advance in the depart
ment store in which he was em
ployed. His parents with whom he
lived in a suburb of. Nuremberg,
advised him to come to America
where greater opportunity awaited
him.
It was difficult for Willi Uhl
felder to break away from his loved
ones in Germany, but being deter

very good English in comparison

though he had never studied it be

to analyze and interpret. His
knowledge of Hebrew may have had
some bearing on his rapid absorp

me an article that he wrote for a
newspaper after being here only
six months, and which reads in
part:

“Germany has ensured, through her rearmament, that in international af
fairs she will again be properly heard. Metal makes an empire strong. butter
only makes people, fat. Either they buy butter and go without freedom, or they
achieve freedom and do without butter. We have decided for iron, and that is
the cause of the butter shortage.”—GENERAL GOERING.
burg '‘Little New York,’ because
you find all kinds of people from
every country there. I had only one
day to see that pretty old town. It
would take about a week to see
everything, but that was not the
place I wanted to go. Someone told
me ‘you haven’t seen anything yet
—just wait until you see New York
in the U. S. A.’
“I never had seen a big ship in
all my life. The name of the ship
I came over with is Hamburg. After

“The Steward told me one night
if you get up early tomorrow morn
ing you will see the Statue of Lib
erty. That next day was one of the
most exciting days of my life, see
ing the big buildings, many ships,
hearing another language. I felt
like a baby and could not under
stand what everybody talked about
and seeing so much traffic. Was I
glad when I sat in the train on the
way to Atlanta, and I surely like
it.”
I asked Willi Uhlfelder about the
difference of customs in Germany
and America, stressing the femi
nine angle. He told me that girls
in Germany are or seem to be heart
ier, but are about equal in beauty.
They do not apply cosmetics unless
they are going to a party or a
dance. They are not allowed to
mingle socially as a rule until they
are eighteen years of age, and then

Dr. Albert Einstein, who was invit

I “The spirit of man must be held
aloft by sturdy hands of every
race,” Dr. James Bryant Conant,
president of Harvard University,
said in welcoming 554 representa
tives of 502 universities in the
United States and 40 foreign lands,
including the Hebrew University of
Palestine, to the celebration. Stress

“universal fellowship based on rea

this troubled century the burden is
to be borne not by one individual
or by one group but by those who
live in many lands. Not the schol
ar, but the community of scholars
must take up all the ability of the
time, all the contributions of the
past.”
