The Past And Future
(Continued from page 8)
Leon Blum was adjured by Jews
of all political parties in France,
save his own, to decline the post
of Premier on the ground that any
evil that might befall France dur
ing his leadership would be sure
to rebound to the disadvantage of
all French Jewry. Rightfully scorn
ing these characteristic counsels of
timidity, Blum accepted the office
of President of the Council and be
came the first Jew in history to be
called to the Prime Ministership of
his country. His first public utter
ance made reference to his Jewish

Upon one great and histone

the World Jewish Congress at Ge

I am a part, however slight, ot its
life. History will determine how
necessary and valuable has been
the World Jewish Congress, lhe
writer is of the number of those
Jews who may say of themselves
that we have sought out our broth
ers and that we feel enriched by
the experience of meeting on terms
of equality and common counsel
Jews of many lands who, to
gether with us, seek the welfare
of Israel and shall, through com

obtain justice for our people. When
the day of justice for the Jew shall
have come, it will be because men
everywhere will have sought
peace through justice and brother

HUNGER IN POLAND
(Continued from Page 9)
the ceiling, some light shone, and
gradually we were able to dis
tinguish things around us. A fairly
large cellar, with two beds in the
center and across them the body of
a man, his face turned downwards.
Next to him and around him three
small children. They gave the im
pression of being soundly asleep.
Completely unaware of our pres
ence.
Now I saw that there were peo
ple around me in this room and a
young girl stood quite near me.
“Are they ill?” I asked the girl.
She shook her head. “No,” she
said, “they are dazed by this bad
air. We all get that way after a
while. . . .” Suddenly I became
aware that my head was aching
and I felt ill, after only a few min
utes spent in this dungeon. The
photographer looked sick and mo
tioned me to go on.
Despite the darkness I could dis
cern some life in the girl’s face.
We began talking and she told me
that she had just returned from a
two months’ stay in the Medem
Sanitarium. “So much fresh air,
such food and freedom,” she whisp
ered, “but so dreadful to know that
had to come back here. Life is
so much more unbearable when one
knows that there is sunshine and
laughter elsewhere in the world.”
The family of the shoemaker
Rotbaum, also consisting of six
children, make their home there
too. He was the man prostrated on
the bed, I was told. Unemployed
over two years—he and his children
were gradually starving to death.
Besides, there is the widow of the
shoemaker Gutterman, who died of
T. B. a few months ago and left
her with two tots. She is the only
one who receives several loaves of
bread a week from the Kehillah
A tiny alcove, wide enough to
hold one bed, adjoined the cellar.
A young boy sat leaning against
the bed and made an effort to stand
up when I entered. But he could
not make it and fell back into his
lifeless position. His breathing was
uneven and halting. “We all get
like that,” I heard the girl say.
“No work, no food, no air, no hope.

more censored than the American
