THE EDITOR.
There is so much poverty in Po
land today that it would be hope
less to dwell upon it. Not only
from what I have heard, but from
what I have seen I know that at
least one-third of the Jewish popu
lation is doomed to an inevitable
death of starvation and tubercu
losis. Heartless as this statement
may sound, it is probably an un
derestimation. To those who live
there permanently—and to such as
myself, who have spent a few
weeks in swift surveyal—the hor
ror and grotesqueness of it passes
all understanding.
After I had spent only a few
days in Poland all homes of hope
lessly impoverished people—people
without profession and trade whom
no one can help any longer—were
eliminated from my visiting list.
Only the homes of laborers, mer
chants and tradesmen who were in
some way being helped, either
through the Child Care activities or
the Free Loan Kassas, were visited.
Due to a law which was passed
in 1927 and became effective in
1932, at least 90 per cent of the
Jewish craftsmen in Poland lost
their right to practice their trade
and to employ apprentices. While
the law was of a general nature, it
affected only the Jews adversely. It
provided, among other things, for
compulsory membership in a guild
and for a general examination be
fore such membership would be
granted. A membership card, be
cause of its high price, was beyond
the reach of most Jewish artisans.
Too poor to be able to afford it.,
unable to comprehend the law and
in the majority of cases completely
unaware of it, they failed to com-

NO. 4, POKORNA STREET, WARSAW, POLAND—In this pic
ture, showing the dark, stagnant living quarters of a family belonging
to that class of Polish Jewry doomed to inevitable death unless eco
nomic persecution is lifted, Irma May stands in the foreground, while
a shoemaker ekes out a humble existence for his family. The pinched,
bleak face of his wife gives mute evidence of the poverty which stalks

ply with it, and are today in the
same position as the vendors of
pretzels and ties, whose trade is il
legal and who run at the first sight
of a policeman. Unable to practice
their trade, unable to find employ
ment—bewildered, helpless and
hunted, they are now the target of
a renewed economic struggle.
To many the name of Pokorna
Street in Warsaw will sound famil
iar. We found house No. 8 easily
enough but could not locate dwel
ling No. 4; it was not on the list.
A child brought us to a small open
ing in the ground which led into a
deep and dark cellar. It sounded
improbable, for on our list were
the names of three families of
shoemakers. Finally we located the
caretaker, who again led U3 to the
cellar door and said: “Don’t act so
squeamish, some people live worse
than that. ...” We descended the
wooden steps deep into a subter
ranean passage and landed in com
plete darkness. We did not know
which way to turn when a candle
light appeared in the darkness, far
off, and a woman’s, voice said:
“This way. Be careful of your
heads.”
The air was so putrid and heavy
that we breathed with difficulty.
