Palestine Mourns Death
Of Founder of Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv (WNS-Palcor Agency)—Permanent tri
bute will be paid to the memory of Meier Dizengoff,
late Mayor and founder of Tel Aviv, by the Pales
tine Friends of the Hebrew University and by the
Jewish National Fund, it is announced here. A chair
will be founded in the Hebrew University to com
memorate Mayor Dizengoff, and the National Fund
will establish a new forest to be named after him.
His name was also given to the first child born after
his death in Tel Aviv.
As Jews throughout Palestine went into mourning
for their first citizen, with flags of all public and
many private institutions flying at half-mast, the
spiritual testament of Mayor Dizengoff was pub
lished. In this testament, written on July 12th, direc
tions for his funeral were given and thoughts on
approaching death revealed. “The
thought of death does not sadden
me,” he wrote.
A greater part of the 150,000
Jews in this all-Jewish city was in
the line of march or thronged the
streets as the funeral procession
for Mayor Dizengoff filed by. Ob-

servers estimated that more- than
80,000 people participated in the
funeral itself. Every one of the
400,000 Jews in Palestine dropped
his work or other activity during
the hour between eleven and noon,
the time of the funeral on Thurs
day, September 24th. The Munici
pality of Tel Aviv, which Dizengoff
had founded and over which he had
presided virtually since that time,
27 years ago, announced a 3-day
period of mourning and the sus
pension of all normal municipal
functions.
As the funeral procession went
by street lights were kept burning
but were draped with black crepe,
and houses were beflagged with
black. M. M. Ussishkin, president
of the Jewish National Fund, Dov
Hos and Israel Rokach, deputy
mayors of Tel Aviv, and the muni
cipal councillors were pallbearers.
Present at the exercises were
high government officials and the
consuls of France, Italy, Yugosla
via, Holland, Latvia, Greece, Fin
land, Switzerland, Poland, Lithu
ania, Czechoslovakia and Austria.

Information contained in the let
ter, according to Mr. Untermyer,
reveals that the German govern
ment has assured merchants of a
subsidy in the form of either a
tax-refund or a new market if
prices would be kept at from 25
per cent to 65 per cent below the
regular cost.
“This means,” Mr. Untermyer
explained, “that the German ex
porter can continue to go ahead and
dump his merchandise in the
United States and at the same time
safely swear that he gets no sub
sidy from the German govern
ment.”

through the use of this solution, ac
cording to Mr. Klein, who perfected
it after several months of experi
mentation at Columbia University.
The solution is used exclusively at
Mackey’s Beauty Shops, 66V2
Whitehall Street, 1037 Peachtree
Street, N. E., and 30 Roswell Road.
At the Whitehall Street Shop,
which has been completely remod
eled and renovated, Mr. Klein re
vealed his plans to make Mackey’s
the only shop with 100 per cent
sanitation. Each booth will have an
individual sterilizer, and nets and
manicuring implements will be re
moved from the sterilizers in the
patron’s presence. Towels and
combs will be wrapped in cello
phane to insure maximum sanita
tion.
Mackey’s Whitehall Street Beau
ty Shop has been beautifully deco
rated, and beauty service can now
be rendered without inconvenience
to patrons. The stairway has been
enlarged, and strikingly finished in
black and orange linoleum. Impres
sive yellow and black glass has
been used in the facade. The in
terior has been refurnished with a
solid, sound-proof ceiling, and
booths are finished in stencil grey
design.
Five additional operators have
been added to the staff at Mack
ey’s, and an appointment booth has
and Mrs. H. H. Epstein, cultural.
The Board is composed of all of
ficers and chairmen and the fol

The Strausseans and Nordaus

27th.
Outstanding plays were made by
Sidney Silver for the Strausseans,
and Stone of the Nordaus.
Both the Strausseans and Nor
daus have won their only thi’ee

been installed for the convenience
of patrons.
Mackey Klein pointed out that
his shops have enjoyed a wide
growth, and that the Jewish wom
en of Atlanta have, by their sup
port, contributed greatly to that
growth.
“Having grown from four booths
to an institution within four and a
half years is a record of which I
am justly proud,” he declared. “I
wish to take this opportunity to
thank the Jewish women of Atlanta
for the confidence they have in me.
They may be assured that upon
making an appointment with me
they will receive the highest type
of beauty service and the finest ma
terials obtainable, with fair and
honest dealings at all times. It
will be my greatest pleasure to as
sist in every way when bridge
clubs, sororities or any other aux
iliaries sponsor an affair. The
boosting and patronage of Atlan
ta’s Jewish women have played an
important part in my success.”
