opolies and large-scale business, his
encouragement of competition, the
dramatic account of his fight
against the New Haven Railroad
these phases of his career in the
light of contemporary findings are
as suprising today as they were—
but for different reasons—to both
capital and labor in the early years
of this century.
It was a revelation to Brandeis,
who had never attended a Syna
gogue or Temple, to discover that
in his own people there burned the
same flame for justice that had
made him one of the most contro
versial figures in American life. It
was Jacob de Haas who drew him
into Zionism, thereby bringing to
the cause of the Jewish Homeland
an illustrious name, a widespread
influence that extended into the
White House, and a burning zeal
tempered by a practicality that few
Zionists possessed.
But misunderstanding followed
him even among his own people, so
that when Judah L. Magnes called
out at a meeting in New York,
“There are higher things than the
Supreme Court of the United
States,” it was a blow that must
have been as stinging as the criti-

1916 to keep him from the bench of
the Supreme Court of the United
States.
It is a fascinating, inspiring per
sonal history of Mr. Justice Bran
deis that Alfred Lief has written—
a work that will endure if only be
cause it is the record of a man who
has come to stand for a symbol of
American liberal democracy.

Mr. Loewinsohn, who is recog

Having recently returned from
New York and Baltimore markets,
where he selected a line of the lat
est fall clothing for men, Mr. Loew
insohn extends an invitation to his
numerous friends and customers to
visit him in his new location.
