Ever since the radical persecu
tions in Nazi Germany began, Italy
has taken great pains to empha
size that the Roman brand of Fas
cism has nothing in common with
Hitlerism except an idea. In sup
port II Duce’s spokesmen could,
and did, point to the fact that anti-
Semitism, official or unofficial, was
virtually non-existent in Italy, and
that the Jews of that country en
joyed complete equality. What was
more, Jews were actually prom
inent in the officialdom of Italian
Fascism. Thus there grew up the
legend that Fascism and anti-Sem
itism were not necessarily syn
onymous. But now the Jews of
Italy are beginning to be seriously
concerned over the ominous tone
of the Fascist press. The Fascists
Regima, chief organ of the Fascist
party, demanded that Italian Jewry
prove its loyalty to Fascism by
breaking away from the rest of
the Jews and called the Jews a
menace to Europe. Then the Vita
Italiana, another important Fascist
paper, declared that “Fascism must
be anti-Semitic because the Jews
are the mortal enemies of Fasc
ism. 1 ’ Such utterances cannot be
regarded as the individual expres
sions of their writers since the
press in Italy is only the spokes
man for the government. Add these
alarming manifestations to the fact
of Italian intrigues in Palestine and
you can understand why the Jews
of Italy are disturbed.
JABOTINSKY
Vladimir Jabotinsky, Zionist Re
visionist leader, is once more dab
bling in international politics. He
has laid before the Polish govern
ment a plan which envisages the
emigration of 750,000 Polish Jews
to Palestine within the next ten
years. To overcome the existing
restrictions on Jewish immigration
to the Holy I^and, Jabotinsky would
have the Palestine Mandate shifted
from England to a consortium
of East European powers headed
by Poland. That this scheme has
won the support and approval of
Poland goes without saying. Any
thing that would rid Poland of her
Jews would be welcome in Warsaw.
The Polish anti-Semites, who have
been urging the mass expulsion of
the Jews, have greeted Jabotin-
sky’s proposal with undisguised en-
thusiam. The Polish government is
also interested since the emigration
of large numbers of Jews would
ease the economic crisis in Poland.
To test out sentiment Poland has
proposed to the League of Nations
that countries now not represented

on the Mandates Commission be
given such representation. This
would enable Poland to demand an
increased quota for Jewish Immi
gration to Palestine and provide
her with a forum from which to ad
vocate the transference of the
Palestine Mandate. The danger of
this scheme is that it plays into the
hands of Polish anti-Semites and
anti-Semites everywhere. If there
is to be mass Jewish emigration
from Poland, why not from Rou-
mania, Austria, Hungary and Lith
uania? The fact is that England
will not give up the Mandate nor
do any responsible Jewish circles
want her to abandon it. Jabotinsky
is playing a dangerous game that
may become a boomerang.

crowded the line of march, determ
ined not to permit the Fascist dem
onstration. All the injuries were
suffered when the anti-Fascists re
sisted police attempts to disperse
them. A brick smashed the wind

call off the demonstration was con
veyed to Sir Oswald by Sir Philip

New York (WNS)—Hailing the
recent refusal of Arturo Toscanini,
world-famous conductor, to Pe r P lt
any concerts directed by him at the
Salzburg Festival in Austria to be
broadcast to Germany, 76 members
of the Philharmonic Symphony Or
chestra and 900 other American
musicians sent him an open letter
of appreciation in the form 01 an
engraved scroll. The letter reads
as follows: “We, the undersigned
musicians, including members of all
the important musical organiza
tions in New York, many of whom
have had the honor and privilege of
playing under your direction, wish
to thank you wholeheartedly for
your recent stand against broad
casting your superb music to Nazi
Germany as a protest against the
Hitler government's barbarous
persecution of all that is genuine
in art and culture. You have ex
pressed the feelings of musicians
all over the world.”

our redemption undertaking with
the fruit of its toil and capital and
the lives of its sons and daughters.
But the Yishub will not retreat or
falter from any sacrifice, remain
ing steadfast and prepared for the
trial forced upon it by fate. But
this cannot be regarded as a battle
to be fought by the Jewish com
munity in Palestine alone. It is
not the lives and rights in the land
of 400,000 Jews which it is guard
ing but the prerogatives of the en
tire Jewish people, their right to
return to the Homeland and renew
their national self-determination.
The entire Jewish people is sum
moned to participate in the defense

which our national future de
pends.”
The statement closes with the
appeal to all Jews to rally im
mediately “to the utmost capacity
for the security and consolidation
campaign.”

English. Five hundred issues of
“La Vara” are sent weekly to Tel
Aviv. Mr. Levy, who was recently
made a member of Columbia Uni
versity’s Spanish department, has
in preparation a new book to be
called “History of the Sephardic
Jews in America.”
He spoke with enthusiasm of the
new Sephardic Jewish Prayer
Book, containing English sermons
and responses, which has been pub
lished by Dr. David de Sola Pool.
The Sephardic Jewish Synagogue
here, Congregation Or Ve Sholom,
will shortly introduce the English
version with the inauguration of
late Friday evening services, he

A new literary auto-da-fe which
would rid Germany of such books
by Jewish authors as still remain
is suggested by the National So-
zialist Korrespondenz, official Nazi
organ. Complaining that “German
university libraries are still full of
Jewish works,” the paper declares
that “thorough work is called for
to make impossible the continued
influence of the Jewish mind.” In
response to this plea Nazi musical
circles have declared war on the
works of Mozart because a Jew by
the name of Levi wrote some of
his librettos. A crusade against
works on jurisprudence by Jewish
judges and writers has been start
ed by the university instructors’
section of the Nazi Guardians of
Justice League.
