Spies Trail Dr. Prinz, Speaker Here Monday
Inform Reich
Of Speeches
Made In U. S.
When Dr. Joachim Prinz, one of
Germany’s foremost rabbis, speaks
here on Monday evening at the
Ahavath Achim Synagogue, it is
not unlikely that in the audience
there will be a Nazi spy who has
trailed the distinguished exile to
Atlanta!
The Third Reich is highly inter
ested in what Dr. Prinz has to say
on his lecture tours, particularly
in the instance of his Atlanta ap
pearance. Dr. Prinz’s topic for the
evening will be “The Downfall of
German Jewry and Its Meaning
For World Jewry.”
This week Dr. Prinz was notified
that he can no longer write for the
‘‘Judische Rundschau,” leading Zi
onist paper in Germany, because
of attacks he has made on Hitler
during his addresses in the coun
try. A description of the speeches
of Dr. Prinz, who came to Ameri
ca in August as a permanent resi
dent, was sent to Germany by a
Nazi informant in New York,
with the result that the "Juedische
Rundschau” was told that it would
have to dismiss the exiled rabbi as
its American correspondent. Be
fore the Gestapo might it clear
to Dr. Prinz that his departure
from Germany would be welcome,
he was a member of the editorial
staff of the Zionist publication.
Whether the Third Reich, having
abruptly severed the connection of
Dr. Prinz with the “Juedische
Rundschau,” is still sufficiently
concerned over his utterances to
dispatch an informant to Atlanta
next Monday is a matter of con
jecture. Possibilities, however,

Exhibit Number One In The Case Against Fritz Kuhn
A New Jersey Judge startles the world this week by stating that he will not grant U. 8. citizenship
to Germans who belong to the Nazi Band. Conflicting with his opinion Is the verdict handed down
several weeks ago by another Judge upholding the citizenship of Frits Kuhn, who Is leader of the Bund.
Fritz Kuhn Is the second man from the left, next to Hitler. This picture was taken two summers ago
In Germany, on the occasion of Kuhn's decoration by Hitler for services to the Naala in their fight against
the “Jewish danger.”

The contributions to the film industry made by Jack
3hertok, Atlantan who is now serving as czar of Metro-
Joldwyn-Mayer’s short subject department, are hailed by
llizabeth Yeaman, noted Holly- +
i/nd commentator, as an important
forward step in film-making. The
columnist’s tribute to Jack Cher-
tok follows the recent announce
ment by Metro-Gold wyn-Mayer
that a long-term contract has been
awarded him as supervisor of the
studio's short subject output.
The article reveals that the for
mer Atlantan heads 80 employees
in the short subjects department,
and 130 in the new animated car-
satisfied with the musical shorts
toon department. He produces 69
shorts a year, including the "Crime
Does Not Pay” series, the Robert
Benchley commentaries, the Carey
Wilson psychology shorts and the
Pete Smith commentaries.
In an interview, Chertok told
Miss Yeaman: "Everyone thought
that I would concentrate on musi

scored another victory over Nazi
Germany in his long fight against
its persecution of artists for rea
sons of race and politics when the
official 1938 program of the Salz
burg Festival omitted the name of
Wilhelm Furtwaengler, director of
the Berlin State Opera. Toscanini
has been at odds with Furtwaeng
ler because he conducted the Na
zi-sponsored Bayreuth festival. For
the past two years the Salzburg
festival program has not been
broadcast to Germany because
Toscanini refused to conduct if
the music were heard in Germany.
Democracy Idea l Upheld AtB ’nai
B’rith Parley In North Carolina
CHARLOTTE, N. C.—An appeal to Jewry to stand firm in support of American democ
racy and to oppose all the isms which are bein g offered as panaceas in these days of world
unrest was voiced here by Sidney Kusworm, of Dayton, Ohio, at the banquet closing the
„ R'nai R’rith +"" 1 ' ' ' ~ I ! “ ” —~ —
State Convention of B’nai B rith
Sunday night.
Mr. Kusworm, who is treasurer
of the grand lodge of B’nai B’rith,
told the audience that "the story
of Jewry today is a ^petition of
the same old story. In this the
five thousand, six hundred and
ninety-eighth year of Judaism, our
people are fleeing, running, hoping
and praying.” Even m the United
SateThe Jointed out, there is in
evidence in many places an in-
sidiuous Nazi propaganda to over
throw America’s democratic in
stitutions and to substitute therefor
a fascist government, while other
groups are attempting to establish
communism,” bolshevism, or some
other ism that would supplant de
mocracy.” He further declared
that B’nai B’rith is the most effec
tive form of insurance Jewry may
carry in its long and often heart
breaking fight for justice and
peace.
The dinner climaxed the con
vention which brought to Char
lotte scores of Jewish leaders from
various sections in North Carolina,
South Carolina and other neigh-
bohing states. The program for
the convention was arranged by
Lewis Bernstein, general chairman
of the convention committee.
Preceding the Dayton lawyer’s
address, were brief talks by Rabbi
William Greenberg, of Charlotte;
Hyman S. Jacobs, of Atlanta, presi
dent of the fifth district of the
order; Alvin Kartus, Asheville
attorney; Sidney Stern, of Greens
boro, a member of the executive
committee of the order, and Rabbi
Samuel Shillman, of Sumter, S.
C. Mrs. Morris Honigman, of Gas

men, and Arthur Goodman, of

Citizenship
Denial Told
To 15 Aliens
HACKENSACK, N. J. (WNS)—
An obiter dictum which may have
a far-reaching effect if it becomes
n precedent was handed down by
Common Pleas Judge J. Wallace
Leyden when he told 124 newly-
naturalized citizens in Bergen
County Naturalization Court that
in his opinion membership in the
pro-Nazi German-American Bund
was sufficient ground for denying
citizenship. He made this state
ment when he learned that 15 Ger
man applicants were among the
new citizens. All of the Germans
specifically denied being members
of the Bund and disavowed Nazi
sympathies. Judge Leyden said,
“You can’t be both an American
and a German. You must be either
one or the other. I consider mem
bership in the German-American
Bund sufficient grounds for deny
ing citizenship. It seems obvious
that a person believing in dictator
ships cannot also believe in the
American form of government.”
Berlin (WNS)—A broad hint
that the long-rumored and thus far
postponed economic measures
against German Jews in trade and
industry may be enacted in 1938
was given by a Nazi Judge in a
Berlin Court who was called upon
to rule in a suit brought by a Jew
against non-Jews for violation of
a business contract. The Judge de
clared that Jews are still permitt
ed to cam a Living in Germany but
predicted that to 1938 they will
be completely eliminated from
German economy.
Night Of Stars
Huge Success
NEW YORK—Before a throng of
20,000 which filled Madison Square
Garden to capacity the amusement
industry paraded hundreds of its
most impressive celebrities in the
foruth annual “Night of Stars”
presented last week as the contri
bution of the theatrical world to
the United Palestine Appeal.
The huge entertainment alao
was the occasion for a celebration
of the twentieth anniversary of
the issuance of the Balfour Declar
ation by the British Government.
Both artistically and financially
this year’s “Night of Stars” was the
most successful since this project
was launched in 1934. Approxi
mately $100,000 was realized
through the performance for Pales
tine settlement.
Prior to the opening of the huge
“Night of Stars” show, Harold
Jacobi delivered a brief greeting
to the large audience in which he
called attention to the fact that
exactly twenty years ago Field
Marshall Allenby entered the gates
of Jerusalem and thus put an end
to Turkish rule in Palestine.
In the absence of Nathan Straus,
who could not leave Washington
where he is engaged in his duties
as Housing Administrator, Mrs.
Straus delivered the message which
he was scheduled to address to
the artists and to the audience.
In this message Mr. Straus, who
is President of “Night of Stars,”
said:
“Not one person in Madison
Square Garden tonight—be he
Christian or Jew is unaware of the
gravity of the Jewish situation
abroad. The very fact that you
are here is in itself a token that
you have understood and have
sympathized."
