Noted Ed ucator
Dies In Jerusalem
Jerusalem (WNS-Palcor Agency)
—Joseph Lurie, noted educator
and publicist, head of the Educa
tion Department of the Vaad Leu-
mi, died suddenly here at the age
of 666. Bom in Lithuania in 1871,
Luri came to Palestine in 1907,
when he was elected head of the
Hebrew teachers of the country.
From 1919 to 1927 he was Director
of the Education Department of
the World Zionist Executive. A
personal friend of Theodor Herzl,
founder of the World Zionist Or
ganization, Lurie was a delegate
to the first Zionist Congress in 1897
and participated in most of those
that followed as one of the most
active figures in the Zionist move
ment.
Although a Hebrew writer and
educator, Lurie was emphatic in
the belief that Yiddish had great
value. In 1899 he was the editor
of a Yiddish weekly. His advo
cacy of Yiddish in those days caus
ed his estrangement from the offi
cial Zionist circles. The weekly,
“Der Jud,” which he edited, be
came the center for Yiddish literary
development in the early part of
the twentieth century. Many of
the world-famous Yiddish writers
of today received their start
through the encouragement of Lu
rie. Among these was Sholom
Asch and Abraham Raisin.

tition. . . but,” he added, “I
don’t know if there is a better plan.
At any rate, whatever happens in
Palestine will depend greatly upon
the coming war. “Yes,” he went
on to prophesy: “a war is coming.
Soon, too.”
This brought us to Europe.
Ludwig lives in Locarno, Swit
zerland, the little town where once
was signed a pact designed to ush
er in a new era of European peace.
He has seen the plight of European
Jewry through his travels over
the Continent and through his
constant meetings with influential
personalities passing through Swit
zerland. Based upon this know
ledge is the theory which he has
devLsed regarding the future of
European Jewry.
‘‘What will happen to the Jews
of Europe?” Slowly he reiterated
our question, staring wistfully out
of the window overlooking Central
Park. ‘‘That depends on what
country they live in. In Eastern
and Central Europe the inevitable
war will at first worsen their situ
ation. There will be pogroms,
many of them. But in the long run
the war will cleanse the air of all

racial prejudices. In Western Eu

But Emil Ludwig was becoming
impatient. The constant flow of
visitors, interruptions by messen
gers and telephone calls made him
restive. But in the course of one
telephone conversation we heard
him refer to one of the larger
Jewish organizations, and when
we took advantage of the situ
ation by asking pertinently why
he had not taken a more active
part in Jewish affairs, he seemed
to have been awaiting this question
and answered with a note of bitter
ness, “I have had some unfortunate
experiences.” He then went on
to tell us how the Jews of Swit
zerland and France had assailed
him for taking up the cudgels in
defense of David Frankfurter, the
young Jewish student who shot the
Nazi leader of Switzerland.
But now we had already over
stayed by fifteen minutes the time
allotted for our interview; and
Ludwig had gotten up and was
walking toward the door—a none
too subtle gesture to usher us out.
Then he remembered he had not
returned a pencil he had borrow
ed from his interviewer. This re
minded him to remind his depart
ing visitor not to forget to send
him Roosevelt’s letter to Slomovitz.
And while Ludwig jotted down his
address down for us, we asked, as
a parting shot: “Do you ever in
tend to do the biography of some
contemporary Jew?” He smiled
and answered, “Well I did the bio
graphy of Jesus—but I suppose
that can hardly be called contem
porary.
“What about Herzl?” we asked.
“That’s been done," said Ludwig
opening the door.

14 minutes and then released;,
thanks to the intervention of an
American newspaper correspon
dent. Gennett said he was alloted
ten minutes for the wreath-laying
exercises. It took him six minutes
to deposit the wreath and utter a
few words including: “I salute you,
unknown soldier. May your soul
rest in peace. As for peace, we
are all interested to have it among
all the people and among all races.”
Then the self-appointed emissary
of peace and good will decided to
use up the remaining time by
saying Kaddish and a Hebrew
prayer for peace. With great re
lish he told how he saluted and
then said: “You shall bring peace
among yourselves.” To this the
Nazi guard replied with the Nazi
salute. Saluting again, Gennett
went on with the prayer: “You
shall bring peace to all of us. And
you shall bring peace to all Israel.
And you shall say amen.” Then
he told the Nazis to say amen, and
and they did, in German. With
two minutes of his time still left,
Gennett said he was tempted to
make the sign of the six-pointed
Star of David on the monument
as the Nazis leave the swastika,
but he thought better of it and
merely left his Jewish War Vet
erans button engraved with the
star pinned to the wreath.
