with regard to the question rais
ed by Geoffrey Mander who in
quired whether it is proposed to
appoint a joint committee of both
Houses to consider plans for the
future of Palestine. The Colonial
Secretary said that he could add
j nothing to the statement he had
: given on October 21st.
Taking issue with the statement
! of the Royal Commission that im-
j migration increases economic ab
sorptive capacity, the Colonial
Secretary told the House of Com
mons that he disagreed with the
conclusion that increased immi
gration by itself caused greater
prosperity.
The question of the effect on
prosperity of immigration was
raised by Col. Josiah Wedgwood,
who asked whether it was the Co
lonial Secretary’s experience in
the colonies generally that the Ro
yal Commission had been correct
in its assertion that greater immi
gration brings about greater eco
nomic absorptive capacity and also
prosperity. The Colonial Secre
tary said that it was clear from
the Royal Commission report that
the wording of this conclusion had
reference to special conditions
governing Palestine immigration.
As to his own observations in the
colonies, he replied that immigra
tion did not have that effect. The
whole matter, he said, was entirely
a question of the amount of labor
and capital available, and that
immigrants do not necessarily cre
ate work.

New York, (NCJC)—A call to
religionists to "do everything in
their power" to stop the persecu
tion of Jews, has been issued by
the World Alliance for Interna
tional Friendship Through the
Churches through its News Letter
to members.
Referring particularly to perse
cution of Jews in Poland and Rou-
mania, the Alliance declared, "One
of the blackest pages in the history
of religion is the persecution of
Jews by Christians and Christian
nations.” Of Poland, the Alliance
said:
“The Polish people have reason
to be ashamed of what Is being
done and what Is proposed as a
further depressive action against
the Jews. There are 3,000,000
Jews in Poland. When Poland was
reunited and established after her
long partition, the people of the
United States felt that at last Jus
tice had been done. Now we And
that these people who suffered so
much are themselves becoming
chief among those who are per
secuting the weak. Whatever may
be the economic conditions and
whatever may be the excuse, there
is nothing to Justify a nation driv
ing out from its borders and set
ting adrift in the world a million
or more of its citizens—men and
women without land, home or
country.”
Referring to Roumania, the
church peace organization declar-
j ed: "The attitude in Roumania is
no better. German anti-Jewish
influence is being felt wherever
the German language is spoken and
wherever the Third Reich makes
any pretense of holding its people
together.”

1 “we can ill afford to jeopardize
, the security of this democracy,
such as it is, by resorting to the
facile methods of oppression and
coercion in our efforts to correct
: the nation’s ills.” Emphasizing
that Christian and Jew have in
common the goal of realizing de-

Michigan governor said it can be

Vienna Stunned
By Royal Wedding
Vienna (WNS)—The political
career of one of Austria’s leading
anti-Semites and an associate of
Hitler in the abortive Munich beer
putsch was ended when Prince
Ernst Ruediger von Starhemberg,
former vice-chancellor and one
time chief of the Fascist Heimwehr,
was wed to Nora Gregor, leading
actress, who is a Jewess. The
marriage was performed secretly
in the Starhemberg castle on top
of the Kahlenberg by Father Gros-
sauer of Gratz, a close friend of
the Prince. Fraulein Gregor is
the mother of Starhemberg’s son
and had been his friend for many
years. The Prince’s mariage to

which designates the area acquir
ed by the German-American Bund
as the site of the camp as a restrict
ed residential and farming section.
The ordinance specifically forbids
the use of that area for “recrea
tional, camping or drilling pur
poses” and prohibits military
training or drilling with or with
out arms "except by the regular
armed forces of the United States."
Under the new regulations the
Bund would be permitted to erect
only “dwellings, farmhouses,
greenhouses, churches, public or
private libraries, public schools,
public museums, roadside stands,
public parks, professional offices,
reservoirs, wells, water towers and
water filter beds" on the land it
owns. The zoning code is subject
to approval by a town meeting.
